Krumau am Kamp can be explored from different perspectives: the Old Hammer Mill and the castle represent local and cultural history, while the cycling route, reservoir tour and boating options offer other ways to experience the area. You can tailor your stay to whether you are most interested in historic sites, a longer cycling route or activities on the water.

History at the Mill, Castle and Church

The Old Hammer Mill operated in Krumau for more than 300 years, until 1952. Its long history of use makes it a prominent part of the town’s industrial heritage and gives it a distinctive place alongside the historic buildings.

The history of Krumau Castle is also connected to a specific person: after her divorce from King Ottokar II of Bohemia, Margaret of Austria retired to the castle around 1261 and remained there until her death. It was part of her estate.

Krumau Parish Church was built in the 1780s using medieval building elements. Its construction period and older components therefore point to different eras. Those interested in architecture will find here a connection between 18th-century building history and medieval heritage.

Special visiting conditions apply to the castle: it is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. The lower castle courtyard is accessible when it is open. Check the opening conditions before your visit if you plan to visit the courtyard.

Cycling Route, Reservoir Tour and Time by the Water

The VOLT cycling loop is about 127 kilometres long. It runs from Rastenfeld to the dam of the Ottenstein Reservoir, along the Dobra Reservoir, through Krumau am Kamp and onward to the head of the Thurnberg Reservoir. Krumau is therefore one section of the route described. Route details may change, so check them before your ride.

The Thurnberg Reservoir Tour focuses on the route along the north shore of the Thurnberg Reservoir and its destination at the Thurnberg Dam. Apart from a short stretch of road around the dam wall, the tour runs mainly on forest tracks.

The information about the two routes offers different points of reference for planning: for the VOLT cycling loop, the approximate total distance and stops are given; for the Thurnberg Reservoir Tour, the details are the route along the north shore, the destination and the predominantly used forest tracks. This lets you first choose between a long cycling route and the specifically described tour by the reservoir.

The Krumau Recreation Centre offers pedal boats, rowboats, electric boats, canoes and stand-up paddleboards for hire. Rental availability depends on the season. Check in advance which types of boats are available during your travel dates rather than assuming the full selection is available at all times.

Fishing from a boat is permitted in the Kampsee Thurnberg fishing area. If you plan to do so, check the applicable licence conditions in advance. There is also a large sunbathing lawn at the Thurnberg Reservoir dam. It offers another way to plan some time outdoors, whether you are interested in a route or an activity on the water.

A Fairytale World in the Fairy-Tale Tower

The Fairy-Tale Tower takes visitors of all ages into the world of the Brothers Grimm and international fairy tales. Its theme therefore extends beyond the stories of the Brothers Grimm. This sets the attraction apart from the historic sites and activities at the reservoirs and offers another cultural perspective on Krumau am Kamp.
