In the Rußbach valley, nestled in the gentle hills of the Weinviertel, Großrußbach combines paths through the countryside with a rich architectural heritage. The town offers a variety of options to help you plan your trip: hiking and cycling routes, churches from different eras, two castles, as well as a market and a cellar lane.
Routes with Different Starting Points
Two hiking trails around Großrußbach start at the Trift. They are 5.09 and 5.49 kilometres long, respectively, so their stated distances differ only slightly. A third route starts at the church in Weinsteig: it leads through the forest past historic sites towards Kreuttal and returns to the church. This gives you a choice of routes that share a starting point at the Trift and a route that starts in Weinsteig. Check current trail conditions before setting off.
The cycling routes have a focus of their own: they connect Großrußbach, Weinsteig, Kleinebersdorf and Karnabrunn. Routes may be updated, so if you are planning your ride around them, check the current route beforehand. Another hiking option is the second day of the summit tour from Mistelbach to Stockerau. It starts in Großrußbach and leads via Michelberg and Waschberg to Stockerau. Unlike the circular routes and routes starting and ending at the same point, this tour follows a designated section between two towns.
Churches and Castles in the Weinviertel
Großrußbach Parish Church is a listed historic place of worship dedicated to Saint Valentine. Built in the 15th century as a late Gothic hall church, it was originally designed as a fortified church. Its construction date, architecture and original purpose give the building several points of historical interest. Großrußbach Castle, a historic grand residence, is located below the parish church.
Weinsteig and Karnabrunn also add to the area’s collection of ecclesiastical buildings. The listed Roman Catholic branch church in Weinsteig is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. It is described as having Romanesque origins and was built in the Gothic style in the 14th century. The Church of the Holy Trinity in Karnabrunn stands in the Karnabrunn forest, on the summit of Stainmeißelberg. It was built between 1684 and 1686 and dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity. Located on the Weinviertel Way of St. James, it can be reached via a fully renovated staircase more than 200 metres long, flanked by six historic stone figures.
Karnabrunn Castle offers a different type of architecture: it is a well-preserved moated castle with a moat, corner bastions and a tower. Together with historic Großrußbach Castle and the churches in Großrußbach, Weinsteig and Karnabrunn, it offers a varied perspective on the market municipality’s architectural history, with each place retaining its own architectural character.
Cellar Lane, Market and Events
The farmers’ market and cellar lane add a culinary touch. Großrußbach Farmers’ Market brings 15 producers together in the Kellertrift. Products on offer include bread, pastries, honey, spirits, liqueurs, pasta, pickled vegetables, seasonal fruit and vegetables, and wine. The selection may change, so consider the variety of products as a guide to what you might find at the market, rather than a fixed assortment available at every event.
Großrußbach’s cellar lane, also known as the Trift, regularly draws visitors with regional delicacies and a variety of events. These social and culinary occasions complement the town’s hiking, cycling and cultural experiences. The events programme may change. If a particular date matters for your trip, check the current event dates before making plans.
