Cellar Lanes and the History of Winegrowing

The cellar lanes shape the landscape of Enzersfeld. There are eight in total, containing more than 200 wine-press houses and Vorkappeln. This makes the cellar lanes a central point of interest for anyone exploring the village on foot and learning about its local architectural and winegrowing history. You can walk through the cellar lanes along marked paths.

Winegrowing also has a long history here: it is documented in Enzersfeld as far back as 1343. That year, new vineyard clearings were mentioned in “Engelschalichsveld.” The historic place name and this early reference provide a specific date for the cultural landscape now shaped by the cellar lanes. Enzersfeld is therefore notable both for a written reference to winegrowing dating back a long way and for its surviving architectural heritage.

Exploring on Foot and Festivals Throughout the Year

For a walk with a clearly defined time frame, the Riedenweg trail offers a useful guide: this circular route is four kilometres long and takes about 60 minutes to walk. This time estimate applies to the Riedenweg. If you would rather explore the cellar lanes, marked paths take you on foot through the local cultural landscape. For guided tours of the cellar lanes, the municipality recommends certified cellar-lane guides. Check in advance whether a tour is available on your preferred date.

Two wine festivals are held every year. In May, the Kellerfest in the Enzersfeld cellar lanes features wine tastings hosted by local winegrowers and vintners. In October, the “stürmisch staubige” Hallo-Wein-Fest offers tastings of Sturm, Staubiger and the first young wine of the new vintage. The months provide a general guide for planning your trip; exact festival dates may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the dates in advance.

Church, Chapel and Other Features of the Village

The history of the church can also be traced through specific architectural and decorative features. The Church of the Nativity of Mary was built in 1681, incorporating an earlier chapel. The chapel was retained as the presbytery, or high-altar area. The old church’s Baroque high altar is now the Marian altar. The crucifixion group on the east side of the parish church was created around 1720 and renovated in 2015. The building’s history thus brings together a surviving part of the earlier sacred structure and later decorative features.

Below the Maria Lourdes Chapel is the Tettenhauerbründl, a spring that flows year-round. The plague column on Korneuburger Straße is also one of Enzersfeld’s sights. Another landmark for the cellar lanes is Pappelspitz, created in 2008: a 25,000-square-metre triangular plot designed to blend with nature and serve as an entrance to the cellar lanes. Its layout and the paths through the cellar lanes offer different ways to explore the area: you can follow the marked route on your walk or focus on the architectural and historical details.
