In Horn, the cultural spectrum ranges from largely preserved 14th-century town walls to exhibitions of contemporary art. Other highlights include a prehistoric collection, a cultural center with several types of events, cycling and hiking trails, the Stadtsee recreation area, and a market held regularly. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the town’s year-round attractions and events scheduled for specific dates. This makes it easier to decide whether to focus on history, the arts program, a market visit, or outdoor activities.
Urban History and Museum
Horn’s town walls date from the 14th century, are largely preserved, and run mostly around the three-sided main square. Well-preserved rectangular crenellations can be seen along Robert Hamerling-Straße.
The Museum Horn houses one of Austria’s largest prehistoric collections. This adds a different historical perspective to the medieval town walls: the collection looks back to prehistoric times, while the walls date from the 14th century. Together, they span the period from prehistory to medieval town fortifications.
Art House and Contemporary Art
The Kunsthaus Horn is a central venue for celebrations, concerts, exhibitions, and workshops. The same building also houses the office and the course and concert operations of the Allegro Vivo International Chamber Music Festival. The Kunsthaus thus brings together different types of events with a specific connection to chamber music. If a particular concert, course, or workshop is important to your trip, check the dates in advance.
Contemporary art is at the heart of the Horn Art Association. Since 1989, it has presented five to six exhibitions each year. Its focus is on works on and with paper, printmaking, and paper objects. This makes its exhibition profile more specialized than the Kunsthaus’s event program. If you are especially interested in these art forms, check the current program before your trip.
Cycling, Hiking, and Recreation
Marked cycling and hiking trails run around Horn. You can plan your day around whether you would rather cycle or hike. Check maps and trail conditions before setting out.
The former outdoor swimming pool site in Horn was redeveloped as the STADTSEE recreation area. This adds another place to relax alongside the trails. Check the current condition of the site before your visit.
Market of the Earth Horn
The regional “Markt der Erde Horn” market takes place twice a month on Saturdays in the main square. It offers mainly organic products, including fish, artisan bread, free-range eggs, game, beer, lamb specialties, and heirloom vegetables. There is also a wine stand and prepared food. The selection offers a variety of ways to discover Horn’s culinary side.
The day of the week matters when planning: the market takes place on Saturdays, but only twice a month—not every Saturday. So check the exact date in advance if you want to include a market visit in your stay.
