Röschitz reveals itself through traces of its architectural and local history, as well as through wine and gentle hills. The elevated parish church, the Trinity Chapel and the Weberkeller each make a distinct impression; in the wine cellar lanes, vintners invite visitors to sample their wines, while the Weinviertelwarte brings named valleys and landscapes into view. This allows you to focus on art, local history and landscape according to your own interests.

Churches, Chapel and Reliefs

The present elevated hall church in Röschitz, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, was built by Leopold Wisgrill from 1768 to 1783. Martin Johann Schmidt created the high altar painting and the painting for the Nepomuk altar in 1781. Both paintings were thus created while the church was still being built: alongside the building itself, its artistic works are also part of its history.

The Trinity Chapel stands at the western entrance to the village. It is a single-nave Baroque building, oriented to the south and dating from 1681. The citizens of Röschitz built it in gratitude for the end of the plague. A Gothic tabernacle pillar dating from around 1500 stands in front of the chapel. The donors, Paul Wögerath and Jakob Marihart, are also connected to the place: they were buried in the chapel.

A distinctive world of imagery can be found in the Weberkeller. Its reliefs are carved in loess and depict historical, mythological and biblical scenes. The models included famous works of art such as the Verdun Altar. The reliefs bring together different kinds of stories, with motifs ranging from historical depictions to mythological and biblical themes.

A glimpse of village life

The Raritäten Privatmuseum Röschitz displays more than 5,000 exhibits relating to village life, customs and traditional crafts. The collection includes old radios, bicycles, mopeds and agricultural machinery. These objects add everyday and work equipment to the collection, giving concrete form to its focus on village life.

Wine and wine cellar lanes

Röschitz’s best-known wine is Grüner Veltliner. Grown in primary rock soil, it achieves excellent quality and has a particularly fruity bouquet. In the wine cellar lanes, vintners invite visitors to sample their wines and offer a wide range of products to take home. Wine here is represented both by a named variety and its connection to the soil, and by tastings and the vintners’ products.

Trails and far-reaching views

The “bodenständig Röschitz – Wege zum Wein” experience trail leads through and around the wine-growing village, crossing gentle hilly landscapes. The “Weinerlebnistour Retzer Land WEST” cycling tour also passes through Röschitz. Check the current conditions for this cycling tour before setting off.

The Weinviertelwarte Röschitz is designed in the shape of a modern wine tank. From its viewing platform, the view stretches across the Schmidatal and Pulkautal valleys to Buschberg in the Leiser Berge, the Retz windmill, the Europawarte near Waitzendorf and the Waldviertel. The tower thus combines its distinctive design with sweeping views across named valleys and landscapes.
