Explore Eggenburg through its collections, medieval history and landscape. At the Krahuletz Museum, exhibits range from geology and palaeontology to archaeology; outside, paths pass city walls, cellars and rock formations. Culture and outdoor activity thus offer different ways to experience the town.

Museum and Collections

The Krahuletz Museum displays extensive geological, palaeontological and archaeological collections on the natural and cultural history of northwestern Lower Austria. Its scope ranges from the formation of the landscape to traces of human activity in the region. The museum is open from 1 April to 30 November, Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays, from 10 am to 4 pm. Check visiting hours before you travel.

In the small park in front of the museum are 22 stone monoliths representing the rocks of the Waldviertel. The subject of geology is therefore also present right outside the museum. The Nostalgiewelt offers a different focus: its collection includes historic jukeboxes, some of which can be played, as well as pinball machines and vintage arcade games.

City Walls and History

The city wall circular walk is a walking route around and through the medieval town, passing its most important sights. You can climb the city wall at two points: by the monastery church and at Kanzlerturm. Outside the main season, check access on site. Trail conditions and signage may also change, so take this into account when planning your visit.

On guided town tours, guides dressed in medieval clothing lead visitors through Eggenburg. The 600-year-old Kanzlerturm houses the collection of the Priv. unif. Bürgerkorps. The 460-year-old Gilli Mill was converted from a grain mill into an oil mill. Together, they highlight two different aspects of the town’s history: a mill adapted to new uses and a collection housed in a historic tower.

Hollow Way and Rock Formations

The “Stone & Wine” route passes through a hollow way, with 19th-century cellars along its sides. They are dug into Ice Age loess, which the wind carried to the eastern side of the hilltop. Here, the architectural heritage of the cellars can be viewed alongside the formation of the loess soil.

The Kogelsteine near Grafenberg, close to Eggenburg, display weathering forms typical of granite, known as spheroidal weathering. Near Stoitzendorf is the Fehhaube, another particularly beautiful rock formation. At the Kogelsteine, the focus is on a named type of weathering; at the Fehhaube, it is the rock formation itself.

Cycling Routes by Course and Difficulty

The “Riesling” wine cycling route is a moderately difficult day trip of about 45 kilometres. It starts in medieval Eggenburg and follows a circular route through numerous villages with unique historical sights. Challenging Cycle Route 7 starts at Eggenburg station and crosses the Weinviertel from west to east. The difference is clear: a moderately difficult circular route of about 45 kilometres through villages, or a challenging crossing of the Weinviertel.

When choosing a cycling tour, you can compare the route and difficulty level. The character of each tour also differs: the “Riesling” route is defined by its circular course and villages with their historical sights; Route 7 is described as a west-to-east crossing of the Weinviertel. These details provide an objective basis for viewing the two routes as different ways to explore Eggenburg.
