Gars am Kamp combines an 11th-century castle and a museum on the Kamptal Cycle Path with leisure activities ranging from puzzle games to an artificial ice rink. You can tailor your stay to culture, exercise or indoor activities. When planning, it is worth keeping the relevant visiting conditions in mind: access to the castle and the dates of individual events may change, and the outdoor swimming pool is seasonal.

Castle, Guided Tours and Culture

Gars Castle was built in the 11th century and is described as Austria’s only free-standing Babenberg castle. Today, it also serves as an event venue. Every year, BURG GARS Opera presents major productions at the historic castle in an open-air setting. If you would like to plan your stay around a performance, check the event dates in advance; the programme may change.

From the castle tower’s viewing platform, visitors can look out over Gars, the Kamptal and the Horner Basin. Access to the tower and event regulations may change. Before your visit, therefore, check whether the platform is accessible.

The Falco Villa offers a different way to experience culture and has been preserved largely in its original state. Guided tours take visitors through the entire house. As ticket arrangements may change, it is advisable to check visitor information before your visit. The Gertrudskirche also has its own cultural features: it has valuable stained-glass windows and frescoes. The Kurpark opened in 1908.

The Zeitbrücke Museum documents the history of trade, including that of Kiennast, a company based in Gars am Kamp. Its location is easy to factor into your travel plans: Gars-Thunau railway station is 200 m away, and the museum is right on the Kamptal Cycle Path. This provides a specific rail connection and a designated cycle-path reference point, without requiring you to assume a particular route length.

Leisure Options and Different Activities

Escape the Town is an outdoor escape game in the centre of Gars am Kamp. The game combines elements of an escape room with a puzzle trail; puzzles are solved both indoors and outdoors. If you enjoy adding a playful challenge to your stay, this offers a different format from visiting a castle or museum.

The Wörth Leisure Centre has three beach volleyball courts, basketball hoops, a skate park, a children’s playground, a football field and soft-surface running tracks. The options range from ball sports and exercise to play and running. Kids Space offers a different focus: this indoor play area for children provides an opportunity for indoor activities.

The Gars Erlebnisbad has a sports pool, a leisure pool and a children’s pool. The sports pool includes a diving area, a water-whirlpool lounger and air jets. The leisure pool has a current channel, massage jets, water spouts and a 58 m-long slide. Opening hours and conditions are seasonal, so check the visit details in advance.

A covered ice rink with an artificial ice surface in Gars is available as a weather-independent alternative. Ice skates can be hired on site for a fee. Before your visit, check the current conditions and whether skate hire is available.

Landscape, Cycle Path and Practical Information

The landscape around Gars am Kamp is characterised by water, forests and meadows. On a section near Stallegg, the Etzmannsdorf circular trail follows the right bank of the Kamp, where various wild animals can be spotted repeatedly. Check the route conditions before setting out.

It is also important to check the route information for the Kamptal Cycle Path: the section between Gars am Kamp and Rosenburg has closures due to hazardous areas. Follow the local diversion and check the route notice before setting off.

For a break featuring a locally named speciality, Kurkonditorei Ehrenberger, with its café and restaurant, offers products made with original Waldviertler Mohnzuzler poppy seed filling, from confectionery to wedding cakes. The selection may change; if needed, ask in advance about current options.

The Gars am Kamp Tourism and Business Information Office provides brochures and information materials at Hauptplatz 80 from Monday to Sunday, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. As visitor service details may change, check the opening hours before visiting.
