The historic main square of Sitzendorf an der Schmida brings together architectural styles from several periods; it is also the starting point of the W 10 Blickbergweg circular hiking trail. This means local history and a route up to the Blickberg offer two distinct focal points for your stay.
Main Square and Local History
The historically and artistically significant buildings on the historic main square date from the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Historicist and Art Nouveau periods. Most of the town houses have cores dating from the 16th century. The range of periods describes the square as a whole, while the dating refers to the cores of most of the houses.
The Jubiläumsplatz is on the northwest side of the main square. It is named after a monument to Emperor Franz Joseph I, which was extensively renovated and restored in 2004. The year refers to this restoration; it does not date the monument's construction.
A medieval tombstone was found in the parish church of Sitzendorf. It depicts Hanns von Wulfestorff, a former feudal lord of Sitzendorf. Guided tours of the historic main square and the parish church of St. Martin are available by appointment. If you plan to take a tour, arrange the date in advance.
Another landmark in the town's history is the Veste, or Schloss Sitzendorf: it was demolished in 1745 because it had fallen into disrepair. A smaller raw-brick building followed in 1765, but remained unfinished. The municipality bought this building in 1876 and adapted it for use as a primary school. This sequence traces the transition from the earlier estate to its later municipal use.
From the Main Square to the Blickberg
The W 10 Blickbergweg starts at the main square and heads uphill eastwards alongside the Haus Hess building. A narrow alley leads to the Am Berg municipal road and on to the Blickberg. Starting from the square creates a clear link between the historic town centre and the trail's scenic experience.
The circular hiking trail is just over two kilometres long, climbs more than 60 metres and runs mostly along farm tracks. When planning, take account of the climb and the trail surface as well as the distance. Distance alone does not give a complete picture of the route.
From the Blickberg, views stretch across the entire Schmidatal valley to the Manhartsberg, which forms the boundary with the Waldviertel. The panorama depends on the weather. Trail conditions can also change with the seasons; check them before setting out if you plan to follow the route.
Seasonal Sports Facilities
The Sitzendorf sports centre has two artificial-grass tennis courts available from late March to the end of October. Availability is limited to this season; check whether the courts are available before your visit. Non-members pay a court fee of €10.00 per hour to the Sitzendorf Tennis Club. As the terms of use may change, check the current arrangements in advance as well.
The Sitzendorf/Schmida artificial ice rink is located at Schulgasse 13, 3714 Sitzendorf an der Schmida. If you plan to visit, first check whether it is open for use.
