Discover Haugsdorf through its viticulture, cellar landscape, and architectural and cultural history. Specific points of interest include an information-board trail on the Hutberg, historic buildings, events, and an outdoor swimming pool. When planning, the scheduled guided tours and varying event dates are particularly relevant.

Viticulture and Cellar Landscape

Of the approximately 547 hectares of vineyards in the municipality, around 70 percent are planted with red wine grapes and around 30 percent with white wine grapes. The ÖKO hiking trail on the Hutberg uses information boards to show the centuries-long development of viticulture and the work carried out in the vineyards throughout the year. This brings both the distribution of the vineyard area and the history of work in viticulture into focus.

The cellar lanes in Haugsdorf are lined with acacia, walnut, and chestnut trees. The Große Kellertrift follows a scenic hollow way for around one kilometre to the 296-metre-high Hutberg. This brings together, on the one hand, the history of viticulture described above and, on the other, the tree-lined cellar landscape and hollow way as specific points of interest.

Guided explorations of the Große Kellertrift are available by arrangement. The meeting point is the Keller-Wohlfühlplatz in the Große Trift; from there, the route follows a scenic hollow way up to the Hutberg. At the Kitla-Keller, the Keller-Wohlfühlplatz offers seating, information about the region, and cycling service equipment such as a pump and tools. If you plan to use these facilities, check their availability for the season.

Architectural History and the Legacy of Franz von Zülow

The Gothic hall church in Haugsdorf is considered one of the few medieval churches to have retained its original form. Across from the church, the parish house contains frescoes in several rooms that are comparable to the fresco decorations in the garden pavilion of Melk Abbey. The church and parish house thus offer two distinct points of interest in the town’s architectural and art history.

The former manor granary took on its Baroque appearance in 1726/28. Following its restoration, the municipality uses it as a village and cultural centre. This building brings together historic architecture and a present-day function in community life.

Franz von Zülow moved to Haugsdorf in 1909. The “Monatshefte” were created there up to 1915, with contributions from his mother Marie and his sister Mitzi. Annual exhibitions, together with other activities, preserve the artist’s memory; guided walks along the Zülow Trail also take place every year and help keep his memory alive. Individual dates may vary.

The annual “KUNST & WEIN” event takes place in mid-August in the Haugsdorf cellar lane. It combines exhibitions and readings with the enjoyment of select wines. As specific dates and programmes may change, it is advisable to check the information for the relevant year before travelling.

Trails and Viewpoints

The Haugsdorf Stations of the Cross has 14 stations and extends for around two kilometres. It runs along the Pulkau stream to the Mandl-Graben, continues to the Antonius Chapel, and then returns to the transformer station. The route, number of stations, and return point provide a clear outline for finding your way.

The viewpoint by the Haugsdorf Freedom Cross has a bench and far-reaching views. Those interested in this viewpoint will find a different focus here from the trails described by their stations, hollow way, or Hutberg route.

Haugsdorf Park Bath

Haugsdorf Park Bath is a solar-heated outdoor swimming pool with a 35-metre water slide. The facility also has a children’s pool and a sunbathing lawn with a beach volleyball court. From there, you can enjoy views of the vineyards and the Haugsdorf Hutberg. Check the condition and availability of the facilities mentioned before your visit.
