Get to know Ebersbrunn through its viticulture and local history—and connect both themes with the landscape on a walk. The Hohenwarth-Mühlbach Route 3 leads east from the village square through a sunken lane and woodland, past vineyards and on to the Hiata Hut. There, you can learn about the life of a vineyard keeper; in the village, the St. Augustine Chapel and historical records also recall Ebersbrunn’s long history. This offers different options for planning your visit: wine and food, a walk, or a look at local heritage sites.

Viticulture and Open Cellar Days

Ebersbrunn has a long tradition of viticulture. The climate on the southern slopes of the Weinviertel towards the Wagram and the Danube Valley, the slightly sandy loess, clay and gravel soils, and the temperature differences between day and night during the ripening period all favour fruity, piquant white wines. At the same time, the red wine varieties Blauer Zweigelt and Blauburger have grown in importance for wine production. Thus, the white wines favoured by the climate, soils and ripening period are complemented by two red varieties that have become more important in Ebersbrunn.

At the annual Open Cellar Days, individual wineries offer their wines alongside culinary delights. It’s an opportunity to include wine and food together in your travel plans. Dates and participating wineries may vary, so check in advance when the Open Cellar Days are taking place.

Walk to the Hiata Hut

The Hohenwarth-MĂĽhlbach Route 3 is an easy walking route covering 5.1 kilometres. The walking time is around 1 hour and 15 minutes, with 108 metres of elevation gain. From Ebersbrunn village square, the route heads east, first through a sunken lane and woodland, then past vineyards. It crosses the road and continues along gravel and vineyard terraces to the picturesque Hiata Hut, before returning to Ebersbrunn. The approximate walking time gives you a guide to how long the circuit takes.

The Hiata Hut was carefully renovated by Anton Kisser, the last vineyard keeper in Ebersbrunn, and offers insights into the life of a vineyard keeper. The route thus connects stretches of countryside with a theme from local viticultural history. Trail conditions and signage can change, so check them before setting out.

Local History and the Chapel

Ebersbrunn was first mentioned in 1110 in a document from Melk Abbey. The first documented form of the village name was Eberichesbrunnen. The parish affiliation also has a specific historical connection: Ebersbrunn has belonged to the Hohenwarth parish since 1759, after leaving the Ravelsbach parish district.

The village is also home to a chapel dedicated to Saint Augustine, which is a listed monument. Together with the Hiata Hut, it offers another way to explore the local heritage: the chapel recalls the area’s religious history, while the hut offers insights into the life of a vineyard keeper.
