A Roman villa, a fortified church and cellar lanes built deep into the hillside: Höflein brings together diverse traces of local history, winegrowing and nature. You can tailor your stay to a range of interests, from architecture and wine to the landscape around Rotenbergen.

Roman villa and fortified church

The Villa Rustica in Aubüheln is a Roman villa, probably dating from the 4th century AD. Its exceptionally well-preserved heating system is particularly noteworthy, offering insight into the villa’s technical facilities. A small fort was also built on the distinctive Kirchenberg hill to protect a road.

The fortified Church of St. Ulrich combines several clearly distinct architectural styles: its nave is Romanesque, its tower is Early Gothic and its interior is Baroque. Together, the villa, small fort and church represent different historical themes, from Roman country life and military protection to church architecture.

Cellar lanes and winegrowing

Höflein has five cellar lanes. The cellars are built deep into the hillside, giving the lanes a distinctive architectural feature. Winegrowing is also closely tied to the village: Höflein is one of the largest winegrowing villages in the Carnuntum wine-growing region. Some 180 hectares of vineyards are cultivated by 140 families.

In Höflein, 16 families run a Buschenschank, a traditional wine tavern. Classic wines, sparkling wine and grape spirits are still considered specialities. The cellar lanes and winegrowing offer two different ways to explore the subject: the construction of the cellars on the one hand, and the work of many families in the vineyards on the other.

A special experience combines the cellar lanes with an introduction to distilling: Brennerei Kollmann offers a guided short walk through the lanes. It covers the village, the Carnuntum region, Roman history and winegrowing. Afterwards, the Destithek introduces visitors to the world of schnapps distilling, with tastings of fine spirits, liqueurs and fruit nectar. The experience can be booked for groups of eight or more; arrange the details before your trip.

Bee education trail and routes through the landscape

The Höflein Bee Education Trail features three display boards, a log hive and an insect hotel. It is near the Villa Rustica. You can park at a clearing in the windbreak. The Höflein Wine Trail is accessible by car; free parking is available, and it is also possible to arrive by bus.

The VIA.VINUM Höflein circular trail offers another perspective on the landscape, passing the Rotenbergen dry grassland natural monument. The Rotenbergen vineyard area includes an old gravel pit with valuable dry grassland. In spring, protected pasqueflowers bloom there in violet—a seasonal natural highlight to consider when planning your stay.

The routes each have a different focus: the Bee Education Trail showcases facilities for bees and beneficial insects, the Wine Trail provides information about arriving by car and bus, and the VIA.VINUM circular trail passes the dry grassland. You can choose according to whether you are more interested in bees, wine or the landscape. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Höflein, these themes can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your stay.
