Hainburg an der Donau combines the history of the town with designated hiking trails and a national park programme that brings together paddling and hiking. This gives you several options when planning your stay: architectural history around Anger and Wienertor, views and hikes on Braunsberg, or an itinerary with routes along the Danube. The designated distances and walking times make it easy to compare the hikes.

Town fortifications and history

The Hainburg town fortifications comprise three gates and around 2.5 kilometres of town walls. The historic town originally developed around Anger, the former main square. The pillory also stands there: it was re-erected in 1957 and bears the year 1724.

Two phases of construction can be distinguished at Wienertor. The lower section dates from around 1225; the early Gothic upper structure is dated to the second half of the 13th century. The gate is 20 metres high, and its roof structure is 11 metres high. The Romanesque charnel house offers another aspect of medieval architecture: the two-storey cemetery chapel dates from the first quarter of the 13th century.

The Wienertor Town Museum is housed in a medieval defensive tower and displays a historical collection on the history of Hainburg. Around 20 display cases present the craft guilds; the collection also includes finds from the Turkish wars, historical documents and medical instruments. These objects and documents complement the townscape’s buildings with insights into various aspects of local history.

Braunsberg and hiking trails

The smaller part of the Danube-Auen National Park is on the Hainburg side. Braunsberg is designated as a nature reserve. From there, the expansive view stretches across the Danube-Auen National Park and the mouth of the March to Bratislava. Part of the Celtic palisade and a watchtower have been reconstructed on the plateau; the landscape and archaeological interpretation offer different reasons to visit.

The Danube Circular Trail is designated as a 3-kilometre, approximately one-hour, family-friendly hiking trail. It leads from the Danube car park through two rock passages. Further route information notes restrictions during high water, which you should take into account before setting out.

The “Up and Around Schlossberg” hiking trail requires a different time commitment: it is 4 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours. Along the way, it passes a well-preserved medieval castle with ring walls, a residential tower, a chapel and a castle courtyard. By the stated estimates, the Danube Circular Trail is shorter both in distance and walking time.

Another hiking trail is 5.5 kilometres long and takes about two hours. It runs mostly through the Braunsberg nature reserve and outside the national park area. The trails therefore differ not only in length, but also in whether the route passes through a nature reserve or by the buildings on Schlossberg.

Paddling, hiking and getting there

The “River - Mountain - Floodplain Forest” programme starts at the harbour in Hainburg. There, national park rangers provide instruction in proper paddling technique. The hike back to the starting point passes the Rötelstein ruins and follows the Danube upstream along its banks. The dates listed for 2026 are from 1 April to 31 October; check availability in advance.

The history of the ruins can also be explored along this route: the core castle was built on the high plateau in several phases between 1156 and 1220. The ring walls at the ruins are still largely intact along their course.
