Prugg Castle and the surviving town walls give Bruck an der Leitha a historic character. Harrachpark, the Leitha floodplains and activities centred on the market and wine add further dimensions to the town. Here, architectural history, landscapes and regional experiences come together.

Castle, town walls and architectural history

Prugg Castle was built in the 12th century; about 80 per cent of the town walls still remain. Here, you can encounter two distinct traces of time: a castle of medieval origins and substantial sections of a historic fortification. On selected dates, exclusive special tours take you through parts of the castle that are otherwise hidden from view; the castle’s owner, Beppo Harrach, personally leads the tours. Check dates and availability before your visit.

The parish church also tells the story of several building phases: it was built from 1696 to 1702 and again from 1738 to 1740. The high altar painting comes from the school of Daniel Gran. More than three decades separate the two building phases, while the altar painting adds its own art-historical note. Guided walks through Bruck an der Leitha are available year-round by prior arrangement. Check the booking terms before your trip.

The Scout Museum presents the history of scouting in Bruck an der Leitha. The Fire Brigade Museum displays historic vehicles and equipment belonging to the Bruck an der Leitha fire brigade and those in the surrounding area. The Agricultural Museum and the Jüly Family’s vintage-car exhibition focus on rural life in earlier times; many classic vehicles can be viewed in two halls.

Harrachpark, floodplains and other experiences

Harrachpark was redesigned in the style of an English landscape garden at the end of the 18th century and serves as a refuge for rare animal and plant species. Route 1 of the Brucker Schritteweg trail runs through the park. Cycling and hiking trails pass through the Leitha floodplains: the park and floodplains offer different settings for walks and bike rides.

The Bruck an der Leitha wind farm includes an observation wind turbine that visitors can climb. The outdoor pool is directly adjacent to Harrachpark. It has solar-preheated swimming pools with a current channel, as well as a diving pool with a 3-metre tower and a 1-metre springboard. The Leithana sports complex includes an ice rink that is open year-round to ice hockey players and the general public; check opening hours before your visit.

Weekly market, wine and routes

The Bruck weekly market takes place every Saturday morning year-round and offers a variety of fresh, regional and seasonal products. Check market hours before your visit. Tastings at HerzstĂĽck include 5 to 7 wines from the winery in question, accompanied by regional tapas from its own kitchen. Check booking arrangements in advance. The scenic vineyards of Carnuntum lie in the wider region surrounding Bruck an der Leitha.

Two routes also explore different themes: the Winzer Tour Carnuntum starts at Bruck an der Leitha railway station. The Römer Tour also starts in Bruck and is a cycling experience route recognised in Lower Austria.
