Rieding can be explored through specific cultural sites and named trails. The branch church of “St Oswald” and the war memorial give the village a historical dimension; above the village are the Madonna am Walde Chapel and the Poms Waterfall. When planning your trip, it helps to consider cultural destinations and hikes separately: for each trail, the starting point, destination and indicated direction are key.
Cultural Sites and History
The branch church of “St Oswald” in Rieding was first mentioned in a document in 1383. The war memorial consists of a glacial erratic with a marble inscription plaque and commemorates those killed or missing in both world wars. The two sites offer different points of focus: the year 1383 marks the church’s first mention in a document; the memorial draws attention to those killed or missing in the two world wars.
A memorial service organised by the ÖKB takes place once a year on Easter Monday. It includes a church service followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial. If the event is the reason for your trip, check the local arrangements in advance.
The Madonna am Walde Chapel is on the Koralpe, about 1.5 km above the village of Rieding. Its building is more than 200 years old and was originally a flax-breaking hut. The dates also refer to different things: 1383 marks the church’s first mention in a document; the figure of more than 200 years refers to the chapel building. This lets you consider the church’s history and the chapel building’s former use as two separate aspects.
Trails to the Poms Waterfall and on the Koralpe
The Poms Waterfall above Rieding is a protected natural monument. From the car park at Gasthof Waldrast, signposted Trail No. 591 leads to the waterfall. This named starting point and trail number provide clear directions for your visit. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.
Another route description leads from the Koralpe car park via Poms Waterfall to the Großhöllerhütte. The trails are well maintained, and the hut is easy to reach. Compared with Trail No. 591, this hike differs in its starting point at the Koralpe car park and its destination, the hut; the waterfall is along the route described. Here too, it is advisable to check current trail conditions before setting out.
Trail No. 560 leads from Wolfsberg’s old town (Bamberghaus) via Schoberkogel and Raucheck to Gasthof Waldrast, where refreshments are available. At the junction for Poms Waterfall, the right-hand Trail No. 592 follows the Ernestinensteig towards Steinschneider. Different points are important for navigating these two trails: the description of Trail No. 560 includes its starting point and waypoints, while that of Trail No. 592 specifies the junction and the indicated direction.
Road Directions
The Koralm Road L 149 also provides a clear spatial reference. It runs from Gemmersdorfer Straße (L 140) in Maildorf via Rieding and Waldrast to the valley station of the Koralmlifte east of Hipflhütte. This places Rieding, Waldrast and the valley station along a named road route. Together with the different starting points of the hiking trails, this information helps you plan each destination for your stay separately rather than treating them as a single tour.
