The Klopeiner See lies amid the rolling forests of the Jauntal valley; its maximum depth is 48 metres. Thanks to a ring sewer system and deep-water drainage, its water is almost of drinking-water quality. As water conditions can change, check the latest local advice before swimming. The landscape, water regulations, trails and culture offer different highlights in Sankt Kanzian Am Klopeiner See. When planning, you can decide whether the lake, outdoor activities or a glimpse into local history should take centre stage.
Lake, activities and practical information
Sport fishing on the Klopeiner See is permitted each year from 1 April to 15 November; check the local regulations again before fishing. Only rowboats are permitted on the lake. You should also check this requirement locally before launching a boat. These are two separate considerations when planning your trip: for fishing, the dates matter; for a boat trip, the permitted type of boat is the key consideration.
The Klopeiner See has a continuous promenade for strolling and relaxing. You can walk or cycle around the Kleinsee. If you would rather plan a downhill mountain-bike ride than a loop, there is a flow trail that descends from the Steinerberg. These options offer different types of activity: a stroll, a loop on foot or by bike, and a downhill mountain-bike trail each provide a different experience.
Trails with views and cultural history
The Kitzelberg Slow Trail starts on the western shore of the Klopeiner See. From its viewing platform, you can see the Klopeiner See, Turnersee and the entire Jauntal valley. The Gracarca cultural trail features six stops in total. The two trails offer different ways to explore the area: the Slow Trail focuses on views across the three areas mentioned, while the cultural trail offers its own thematic focus through its stops.
Gracarca is also associated with a much earlier period: this important Iron Age hilltop settlement was inhabited from the 9th to the 1st century BC. A Roman dugout canoe, around 1,700 years old, was also discovered at the bottom of the Klopeiner See. The church in Wasserhofen houses the mural “Ecce Homo” by Carinthian artist Valentin Oman, created in 2001. The hilltop settlement, the find on the lakebed and the mural each represent a different period and offer different ways to explore the area's history.
Forest Adventure World and Badehaus
The Forest Adventure World covers more than 20,000 m². It includes a 25-metre-high treetop trail and a 500 m² indoor play area. This attraction combines a large site, a treetop trail and an indoor area as distinct features. When choosing what to do, you can consider which of these appeals to you most.
The Kärntner Badehaus on the Klopeiner See offers a different experience, with six different saunas and a heated infinity pool outdoors. While the promenade, trails and cultural trail combine physical activity with exploration, the focus here is on saunas and the pool.
