Lippitzbach showcases a distinctive part of Ruden’s industrial history: it was home to the first crucible steelworks outside England and Austria’s oldest sheet-rolling mill. Historic buildings, cycling routes and seasonal cultural events also offer a range of ways to spend your time here. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment in Ruden, it’s worth deciding first whether industrial history, architecture, cycling or an exhibition will shape your travel plans.

Industrial History and Buildings

At the Drau crossing in Lippitzbach, south of Ruden, an industrial site features visible remains of a once important industrial complex. Lippitzbach Castle is a stately industrialist’s residence dating from the early 19th century, with a historic chapel annex. The castle complex is significant for its history, architecture and cultural heritage.

The new Lippitzbach Bridge opened in 2005 and features a 2.5-metre-high bronze statue of Saint John of Nepomuk at its centre. Today, Lippitzbach Bridge is one of the most significant surviving engineering structures built by the Ignaz Gridl Bridge Construction Company in Vienna.

The ruins of Weißenegg Castle lie northeast of Ruden and were first mentioned in records in 1243. An old wine-growing area in Ruden is known as “Weingarten” and has been documented since the 17th century. The dates refer to the ruins, the historic cultural landscape and the bridge in different ways: 1243 marks the first recorded mention of the ruins, the 17th century the documented existence of the wine-growing area, and 2005 the opening of the new bridge.

Cycling Routes and Mobility

The R1 Drau Cycle Path passes through Ruden and crosses the ÖBB Drau Bridge, also known as Jauntal Bridge, south of Eis. The R6B Haimburg Cycle Path runs from Völkermarkt via Haimburg and Griffen to Ruden, where it joins the R1 Drau Cycle Path. The R6B route description names the places along the route and its connection in Ruden; the R1 route description also includes its continuation south of Eis across Jauntal Bridge.

Jauntal Bridge features in two different travel interests: as part of the R1 route and as a location for bungee jumping. Bungee jumping from the 96-metre-high bridge is associated with Ruden. The operator’s dates may vary, so check the latest schedule if you’re planning this activity.

The “Völkermarkt” Postbus Shuttle also serves the municipality of Ruden. If you plan to use the shuttle, check the current timetable in advance. There are also opportunities for fishing in Ruden.

Exhibitions and Refreshments

The MUSEUM am Bach holds changing seasonal exhibitions each year, featuring contemporary artists, researchers and regional cultural associations. If you’re planning a visit, check the current exhibition dates in advance.

Most tavern Kaschnig serves traditional dishes and other culinary offerings from Wednesday to Sunday. If you’re planning to stop for a meal, check the current opening days in advance.
