Oberkolbnitz can be explored through several distinct themes: a historic Roman road, a church with a precisely dated year of consecration, a work of art and natural attractions nearby. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the village itself from destinations around Danielsberg and Kolbnitz. This makes it possible to consider culture, landscape and cycling tours according to their respective focus, without combining them into a single route.
History and Art
The Roman road ran through Oberkolbnitz, Preisdorf and Penk. Maria am Sandbichl was consecrated as a church in 1759. These two details offer different historical perspectives: the course of the Roman road names several places, while the year of consecration marks the history of a specific church. Those interested in the history of the area can consider a broader historical route and a precisely dated ecclesiastical landmark side by side.
Another cultural facet is the work of art on the walls of the Metallbau Wilhelmer company in Oberkolbnitz. Painted scenes are combined there with real metal parts and three-dimensional structures. The work is part of the Mölltal Open-Air Art Project. Unlike the historical themes, its distinctive appeal comes from the interplay of painting and real materials.
Landscape and Waterfalls
Danielsberg is located near Oberkolbnitz. The entire mountain cone has been designated a landscape conservation area since 1964. Its location outside the village and the extent of the protected area help distinguish the mountain as a separate destination in the surrounding area rather than equating it with the village itself.
The waterfalls on the Bernitzbach are in Kolbnitz, outside Oberkolbnitz. They have three drops with a total height of around 80 metres. Access is via the old main road in the direction of Fuchsfarm. This gives both the approximate total height and a specific indication of the direction. When planning an outing in nature, this destination can thus be distinguished from Oberkolbnitz itself.
Nature Trails, Cycling Routes and Via Ferrata
The Preisdorf nature trail leads to Danielsberg in the area around Oberkolbnitz and showcases the local flora and fauna. Its focus differs from the landscape conservation designation: the trail centres on plants and animals, while Danielsberg is about the protected landscape. Nature can therefore be explored either through information about flora and fauna or through the protected mountain cone.
Two mountain bike routes with different starting points are described. The Danielsberg Tour (RE2), starting at the car park by the Kolbnitz municipal office, passes through Unterkolbnitz, Oberkolbnitz and Preisdorf. The Zwenberg Tour (RE1), starting at the Kolbnitz municipal office, follows the same route through these three places. The starting point is the specific difference when comparing them: RE2 starts at the car park by the municipal office, while RE1 starts at the municipal office itself.
The Danielsberg via ferrata is reached via a signposted road through Oberkolbnitz to the Herkuleshof on Danielsberg. From the Herkuleshof, the approach follows Trail No. 571 through a small wood, across a meadow clearing and then back through the forest to the climbing rocks. The drive and walking section are described as successive points along the way. Check the current route information before setting out.
