The historic Henneberg Trail, the shady Ebenwald Trail and a level walk along the banks of the Gail differ in route character and time required. There is also a cross-country ski route with an access point at the Gundersheim Gail Bridge, as well as Roman finds between Gundersheim and Reisach. This makes it easy to plan a stay around hiking, cross-country skiing or an interest in cultural history.

Hiking trails with different time requirements

The Henneberg Trail is a historic hiking trail in the Naturarena Kärnten and starts in Gundersheim. Its first section, from Griminitzen to the Gundersheimer Alm, is called the Kofl Trail and has been reopened for walkers. The hike from Gundersheim to the Gundersheimer Alm along the Henneberg Trail is listed as taking about two hours. If you plan to visit the Alm, you can use this approximate time as a guide to how long the outing will take.

The shady Ebenwald Trail runs between Grafendorf, Gundersheim and ReiĂźkofelbadstraĂźe; the walk takes about 30 to 60 minutes. Compared with the roughly two-hour hike to the Gundersheimer Alm, this is the shorter option. Its shade and shorter walking time make the Ebenwald Trail another option for planning your day when you have less time set aside for walking.

West of Gundersheim or Griminitzen, a level walk follows the banks of the Gail to the Nölblinger Steg. The named destination gives the route a clear direction; its level course offers a different selection criterion from the walking times of the two hiking trails. If you are looking for a flat walk, you can therefore choose this route for its character.

The Gail Bridge and cross-country skiing

The Gundersheim Gail Bridge serves different purposes on two routes: the Gundersheim–Grafendorf WY_N16 hiking trail starts there, while it is listed as an access point for the Obergailtaler Panoramaloipe. A starting point and an access point refer to different functions. The cross-country ski trail (classic and skating) is 35.9 kilometres long and rated as moderately difficult. Its length and rating indicate the scale of the route and its level of difficulty. Access points may depend on snow conditions; check the latest conditions before setting out to ski.

Roman traces between Gundersheim and Reisach

A Roman building, believed to be up to 2,000 years old, was discovered between Gundersheim and Reisach: a so-called villa rustica. The discovery was reported in April 2026. Excavations uncovered a drinking fountain, remains of underfloor heating and parts of the façade design. The finds touch on different aspects of the building: its water supply, heating and exterior design. Alongside the area’s trails and natural attractions, they give it a specific connection to cultural history.

A destination in the surrounding area

The Achornacher Alm lies near Gundersheim. The access road runs via Stranig and the Straniger Alm, past the Waidegger Alm, along a well-maintained gravel road. Road conditions and access rules can change; check the latest conditions before visiting. This approach to planning differs from the walking routes in Gundersheim: here, the route’s sequence of named places and road conditions are what matter.
