Hiking the L20 Healing and Mineral Water Trail

The L20 Healing and Mineral Water Trail runs from Stuben to Willersdorf; from Stuben, it follows the Stubenbach stream to Rettenbach. As a running, hiking and Nordic walking trail within the running and walking arena, it is designated for several types of activity. Before setting out, check the route and trail markers on site, as conditions and markings can change.

Along the route, visitors can taste and compare natural mineral waters at three locations. Check water access on site. This makes the trail a way to combine exercise with a specific point of interest along the way, beyond the route itself.

More trails: Navigation and cycling

On the hike to Speckkammerl and Kienberg, after 20 minutes a signpost points straight downhill to Stuben; the path to Speckkammerl branches off to the right. Check the signs on site. The two directions indicate different destinations and provide clear guidance when choosing your route.

For cyclists, a moderately difficult road cycling tour runs from Bad Tatzmannsdorf over the Wenzelangersattel to Stuben. It is 45.5 km long and includes 863 metres of ascent and descent. The difficulty rating, distance and elevation gain provide specific figures for planning; check the latest tour information before setting out. Kilometres and metres of elevation answer different planning questions: route length on the one hand, and ascent and descent on the other.

The activities address different planning questions: for the L20, consider the type of activity and mineral water; for the hike, the direction at the signpost; and for the cycling tour, distance, elevation gain and difficulty. This lets you choose the focus of your stay based on exercise, navigation or cycling.

Protected area, local history and craftsmanship

Stuben is part of the Bernstein-Lockenhaus-Rechnitz European protected area. On a broader regional scale, the protected area encompasses the Bernstein and GĂĽnser hills and around 30 cadastral municipalities; extensive continuous forest areas characterise the landscape. The roughly 30 cadastral municipalities illustrate the regional scale and place Stuben within a wider landscape context.

The origin of the place name also has a historical connection: Stuben is thought to derive from a heated room that served as a place for border guards to stay. This interpretation links the name to a former function and adds a historical perspective to the themes of trails and landscape.

In the wider region around Stuben, in the municipality of Bernstein, there is a globally unique deposit of noble serpentine. In serpentine workshops, the bright green noble serpentine is handcrafted into jewellery, decorative items and everyday objects. The focus here is on the material and the craftsmanship. This connection leads to the municipality of Bernstein and broadens the regional themes with a look at local crafts.
