Explore Bernstein through its swimming options, hiking trails and the culture of noble serpentine. When planning your stay, consider what you’d like to focus on: should water and exercise take centre stage, or would you prefer to set aside more time for the museum, castle and crafts? The options offer different experiences and can be tailored to your interests.

Water and trails

Bernstein’s natural swimming pool is fed exclusively by spring water. The Bernstein natural swimming pool has a 750 m² bathing area for swimmers, non-swimmers and small children. Facilities include a paddling area for small children, bathing platforms, a gently sloping gravelled shore, a water slide and a beach volleyball court. Alongside swimming, you can also enjoy specific facilities such as the gently sloping shore and beach volleyball court.

Bernstein is a popular starting point for hikes in the Geschriebenstein–Írottkő Nature Park. The Bernstein Planetary Trail offers a different focus: Over 5.5 kilometres, it depicts the Sun and its eight planets to scale, in proportion to their actual sizes and distances, at a scale of 1:1.1 billion. If you’re choosing between hikes in the nature park and the planetary trail, the main difference is their subject: the protected area on one hand, and a scale model of the solar system on the other.

Noble serpentine at the Rock Museum

A special piece in the noble serpentine collection at the Bernstein Rock Museum is a mosaic vase made from more than 500 pieces of noble serpentine, each with a different degree of translucency. The vase was awarded a gold medal at the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels. This piece brings together the material, its mosaic design and a specific historic exhibition award.

Multilingual electronic information panels guide visitors through the different museum areas and explain the many exhibits. They combine directions around the museum with information about the exhibits. If you’d like to work with the material yourself, you can make a piece of jewellery or a worry stone from raw noble serpentine at the museum’s noble serpentine workshop, with expert supervision. Choosing between these two finished pieces gives the workshop its own practical focus. As the schedule may change, please check the current options in advance.

The castle and planning your visit

Bernstein Castle was first mentioned in 1236. It includes fortifications, a castle garden, a chapel and a Renaissance banqueting hall. The castle offers views of the Hungarian Plain and southern Styria. If you’re planning a visit or guided tour, check the current visiting options in advance.

Sunday services at the Evangelical Church in Bernstein are held at 9:00 a.m. Check the current service information before your visit, as it may change. Telephone reservations are requested for visits to the Habetler noble serpentine workshop, so remember to call in advance.

Choose a hotel based on your interests

When searching for hotels in Bernstein, you can first decide which experiences you’d like to shape your stay: the natural swimming pool and hiking trails, the planetary trail, or culture at the Rock Museum and castle. This lets you base your search on the activities you actually want to include, rather than trying to fit every option into a fixed itinerary.
