Oberwart offers a variety of reasons to stay: the cultural program of the Open House Oberwart (OHO), historic details in the townscape, markets and the Lebenswart Adventure Trail. When planning your trip, the first thing to decide is whether you want to focus on an event, a market day or outdoor activities. So when looking for a hotel in Oberwart, it’s worth checking the dates that will shape your trip.

Culture at the Open House Oberwart

The OHO offers exhibitions, concerts, plays and many other cultural events. Since the program changes over time, check the dates for your travel period if you have a specific visit in mind. Since 1989, the OHO has seen itself as an independent art house. Several disciplines have a home there and often interact with one another. The venue is therefore not devoted to just one art form: depending on the program, different cultural formats may be of interest when planning your trip.

Town history and architecture

Oberwart was first mentioned as “Fels-Eör” in a document issued by King Charles I in 1327. The town’s history also includes border guards who served as military farmers under the Hungarian king, guarding the border with what is now Styria. Arcaded houses are typical of Oberwart and are particularly common in the older residential districts. They give these districts a distinctive architectural feature to look out for as you explore the town.

Public art and individual buildings also give Oberwart its distinctive character. The sculpture “Border Guard of Oberwart” stands on the steps leading to the main entrance of the town hall and is based on the town’s coat of arms. “Koarl” is on a bench in front of the town hall. The Dellacher House is considered an architectural rarity in Oberwart. Together with the arcaded houses, these places offer different ways to explore the town’s architectural and urban history.

Oberwart’s cultural diversity includes German-, Hungarian-, Croatian- and Romani-speaking residents. For centuries, the Roman Catholic Church, the Evangelical Church (Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession) and the Reformed Church (Evangelical Church of the Helvetic Confession) have also contributed to this diversity. These linguistic and religious influences are another part of the town’s history, extending beyond individual sights.

City Garden: gathering, remembrance and activity

The new City Garden opened in 2023 as a place for relaxation, gathering and communication for all generations. The Memorial Square is home to the war memorial and the monument to the victims of National Socialism. Two water basins with seating and trees frame the square. In this way, a place of remembrance and landscaped areas for spending time together are part of the same City Garden.

The City Garden also has a motor skills park with various stations where visitors can train motor skills, fitness and coordination. If specific stations are important for your visit, check the current facilities, as individual pieces of equipment may change. A public playground is located at Schubertgasse 16–18; the listed play equipment includes a climbing tower, a swing and a slide. The playground equipment may also change.

Weekly markets and regional products

The Oberwart weekly market takes place every Wednesday in the area around the main square and the City Garden. The Oberwart farmers’ market is a separate event: it takes place on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the City Garden, except on public holidays. Local producers sell regional delicacies there. So if you’re planning a market visit, be sure to choose the right day of the week; for the farmers’ market, also take note of the public holiday exclusion.

Explore the Lebenswart Adventure Trail

The Lebenswart Adventure Trail is a cycling and hiking route for the whole family, where you can discover Oberwart and the Wart region. Oberwart and the surrounding region also have a well-developed network of running, walking and cycling routes. The two descriptions have different focuses: Lebenswart refers to a specific trail and the area you can explore along it, while the trail network includes the wider region as well as Oberwart. When choosing activities, you can therefore follow a named route or take the broader regional scope into account.
