Kohfidisch can be explored through several distinct themes: geology, views and literature shape the landscape on the Csaterberg, while castles and wine add a cultural perspective. When planning an outing, it is worth distinguishing between the trails by their focus: the literary trail centers on texts, while a specific distance is also given for the Three Vineyards Circular Trail.
Csaterberg: Twin Mountain, Opal and Views
The Csaterberg consists of the twin hills Klein Csater and Hoch Csater and forms the southwestern foothills of the Eisenberg. The surface rock of both hills consists almost entirely of freshwater opal; this deposit is of particular significance, at least on a European scale. The Csaterberg Stone Museum displays fossilized wood, freshwater opals and jasper, all of which come exclusively from the Csaterberg.
The Marienkapelle stands at the highest point of Hoch Csater; on clear days, the distant view from there reaches the Eisenberg and far into Hungary. The Csaterberg thus brings together two distinct themes: the geological feature of the twin hills and the weather-dependent views into the distance.
Literary Trails and Vineyards
The literary trail on the Csaterberg runs along two hiking routes and features 42 panels with short texts by Burgenland authors. At the information point by the old wine press, visitors can listen to audio samples from literary works. Reading and listening are thus two distinct elements of the same themed trail.
The Three Vineyards Circular Trail opened in September 2025. The 14.1-kilometer circular route passes through the southern Burgenland vineyards of Eisenberg, Deutsch SchĂĽtzener Berg and Csaterberg, as well as through the municipality of Kohfidisch. The two trails have different focuses: the literary trail emphasizes hiking routes with texts and audio samples, while the Three Vineyards Circular Trail is a measured route through three named vineyards. There are also opportunities for walks in the districts; hiking is encouraged on the Csaterberg.
Castles, Chapels and Wine
Erdödy Castle was built in the 18th century on the remains of a medieval castle. Kohfidisch Castle is a Baroque ensemble dating from the late 18th century and has been owned by the Erdödy family and their descendants since 1582. The two buildings thus have different historical associations: Erdödy Castle with the medieval castle that preceded it, and Kohfidisch Castle with its Baroque style and family ownership history. Kohfidisch Castle was also used as a wine tavern and a venue for parties and celebrations.
The wine shop at the Gasthof zum Weinberg is the flagship and hub of all activities related to wine. A religious and viticultural tradition also connects wine with the landscape: during a procession, participants walk to the chapel on Hochcsater, singing and praying, where the priest performs a vineyard blessing.
