Horitschon combines the Pannonian landscape with viticulture, a circular hiking trail through the vineyards and historical traces. This offers different ways to plan a stay: spending time outdoors, learning about local red wine culture or taking part in a seasonal wine event.

Vineyards and the Pannonian landscape

Horitschon lies at the start of the Pannonian lowlands, not in a mountainous area. Its sheltered location south of the Ă–denburg Mountains is influenced by the mild Pannonian climate of nearby Lake Neusiedl, where Mediterranean and continental influences meet.

The Blaufränkisch Trail is a circular hiking route through Horitschon’s Hochäcker and Dürrau vineyards. The starting point is the association hall at Kirchenplatz. From the Blaufränkisch viewpoint, the platform offers a 360-degree view at any time of day; the Hochäcker and Dürrau vineyards are also visible. The trail and viewpoint are specific places to visit for a landscape-focused stay, without assigning a walking time or difficulty level.

Red wine and distinctive winery profiles

At Eichenwald Weine, red wines make up 90 percent of the range, led by Blaufränkisch. The winery is an event venue with up to 1,000 oak barrels. The Moritz family has been growing wine in Horitschon for over 60 years. Bioweingut Moritz cultivates around three hectares and grows only Blaufränkisch and Blauer Zweigelt; it has been fully organically farmed since 2006.

IBY Rotweingut also focuses exclusively on red grape varieties, with Blaufränkisch as its main focus. The information about the three wineries shows different aspects of the local red wine profile: Eichenwald’s high proportion of red wine and oak barrels, Moritz’s long history of viticulture and organic farming, and IBY’s focus on red varieties. This provides a useful guide if you are interested in wine culture, without treating the wineries as interchangeable.

Wine tastings and seasonal events

At Kohlmann’s tasting room in Horitschon, you can sample spirits and liqueurs; advance booking is required. Depending on the programme and group size, the tasting may include a tour of the distillery and, on request, a regional snack. It then lasts around three to four hours. Plan this as a separate block of time rather than treating it as a quick stop.

RotweinOpening is a recurring seasonal event held at the end of May. It features open cellar doors, tastings straight from the barrel and the current ranges of the participating wineries. Horitschoner RotweinHerbst begins at the end of October and also features cellar doors thrown wide open, wine tastings from the barrel and the current ranges of the participating wineries. If you want to plan your trip around either event, check the specific dates before travelling.

Church and archaeological history

Horitschon Parish Church was built between 1947 and 1949 and is dedicated to Saint Margaret. An older historical connection leads to the Teichäcker fields: in 1933, an exceptionally richly furnished Roman villa rustica with underfloor heating was excavated there. The excavation and the church represent different periods and complement the wine-related themes with local and regional history.

You can keep the different themes of your stay distinct: the circular trail and the Blaufränkisch viewpoint represent the vineyard landscape, while tastings and seasonal wine events offer different ways to explore wine. The tasting at Kohlmann requires advance booking and may last several hours, while the events take place at specific times of year. This makes it easy to plan your visit around the experiences you actually want.
