Großmutschen offers two distinct starting points for planning your trip: you can begin the Unendlichweg here on foot or by bike, while Roman traces and listed heritage sites provide a focus on cultural history. Before looking for a holiday apartment, decide whether you want to focus on activity along a route or on the history of specific places. The municipality publishes current information about the Unendlichweg; include it in your plans before setting off.

Plan your Unendlichweg trip

You can begin the Unendlichweg in Großmutschen on foot or by bike. The small Unendlichweg is about 8 km long and takes approximately two hours. These estimates give you a rough timeframe for fitting the tour in alongside other plans; leave room for breaks when planning your day, too. Choosing how to travel and deciding how much time to allow for the small Unendlichweg are two separate planning questions: one concerns how you want to start, the other the time required for the tour. This lets you include the route in your itinerary without deciding in advance how to spend the rest of the day.

Roman traces in the Urbarial Forest

Remains of the ancient Roman Amber Road are still visible today in the Großmutschen Urbarial Forest, which has been a protected heritage site since 1931. The Roman Amber Road has also been developed as cycle route B47, from Strebersdorf to Deutschkreutz. These are two distinct points of interest for planning a trip: the visible remains are located in the Urbarial Forest, while the route information refers to the cycle route and its endpoints.

Another way to explore the Roman theme is the “Roman Military and Weapons” display panel in the Großmutschen Urbarial Forest. It covers Roman military and weapons and displays copies of a soldier’s gravestone and a milestone. The cultural theme therefore extends from visible road remains to military history and copies of two specifically named objects.

Church and wayside shrine

Religious heritage sites provide another distinct point of interest. The Federal Monuments Authority lists the Catholic branch church of the Three Holy Kings as a protected heritage site in its 2026 Burgenland monuments register. The figure shrine “Stoning of St Stephen” is also listed as a protected heritage site in the Burgenland monuments register dated 28 May 2024. The church and shrine thus offer a cultural focus different from the Roman themes: a branch church and a wayside shrine featuring a specifically named depiction.

Use your trip idea to filter accommodation

Your trip idea is a useful first filter when looking for accommodation. If the Unendlichweg is central to your stay, take its approximate duration into account when planning your day; if you are interested in cultural history, choose between the Roman themes and the religious heritage sites as your focus. Then compare holiday apartments according to your personal requirements.
