At Königsdorf Natural Swimming Lake, the facilities include clean, chlorine-free water, pedal boats, stand-up paddleboarding and an adventure playground. But discoveries in the Jennersdorf region extend beyond the water: historic memorial sites, art and paths through the gently rolling landscape offer other ways to explore. Water and paths through the landscape
Jennersdorf outdoor swimming pool has ample parking for bicycles and cars, a children’s playground and two beach volleyball courts. Guided canoe tours are offered on the Raab. These are different ways to spend time by or on the water: pedal boats and stand-up paddleboarding are available at the natural swimming lake, while guided canoe tours are offered on the Raab.
The region around Jennersdorf has numerous hiking trails through gently rolling countryside. The Raab-Örség-Goričko Nature Park has several themed trails and experience tours; nature park guides explain the special features of the Raab region along the way. Guided hikes lead to the tripoint where Austria, Hungary and Slovenia meet. If you are looking for a specific circular route, the Peace Trail in Mogersdorf offers an easy walk leading up to Schlösslberg.
Neuhaus am Klausenbach castle ruins can also be reached on foot: a footpath leads from the village of Neuhaus to the ruins. From the observation tower, the view extends across the Neuhaus hills and Slovenia to Tabor and Kapfenstein castles, as well as the Styrian hills. These places and landscapes offer different vistas, while the Peace Trail is a circular route leading up to Schlösslberg.
The Uhudler district on Hochkogel has a different kind of landscape. It lies on a south-facing slope about two kilometres above Eltendorf. The old wine cellars are nestled idyllically into the hillside and invite you to relax and linger. The destinations also differ in character: alongside guided hikes and a circular route, this is a place to pause and take your time.
History, art and memorial sites
Tabor Castle is considered the oldest building in Jennersdorf District today. In summer, the castle courtyard is used for opera performances. The historic building and the summer cultural programme offer two different reasons to visit Tabor Castle. At the Kreuzstadel Museum, the “1664 Memorial Room” commemorates the historic battle against the Ottomans in 1664 with pictures, documents and exhibits.
Schlösslberg is also connected with history and remembrance: decades of efforts, along with national and international events and activities, have transformed the historic battlefield into a place of international understanding and peace. The Peace Trail is an easy circular route leading up the mountain. You can include both the route details and the site’s special significance in your excursion plans without conflating it with other hiking destinations.
At the artists’ village of Neumarkt an der Raab, the studio houses have been making cultural history for more than 50 years. Art courses led by internationally renowned artists take place there as part of the summer academy. The studio houses and the courses represent two sides of the artists’ village: its cultural history, shaped over decades, and a specific programme centred on art.
The pilgrimage church “Maria Heimsuchung” in Maria Bild houses a devotional image based on a copy of the Madonna painting from Máriapócs in eastern Hungary. This connection links the site to a specific artistic model from beyond the region. For travellers interested in religious art, it offers a special point of interest to discover alongside the historical and artistic themes of the other sites.
Tours at Jost Mill may cover types of grain and flour, their intended uses and applications, nutrition tips, and cooking and baking classes. In addition, from April onwards, arts and crafts and culinary delights are offered there on the first Sunday of each month.
