Tabor Castle is located in Neuhaus am Klausenbach, in the Raab Nature Park, where Austria, Hungary and Slovenia meet. The castle ruins and the “Old Border” circular trail give the village a historical focus; the Apple Trail and variety garden are dedicated to fruit and cuisine. A hilly cycling route and an outdoor swimming pool also offer different ways to experience Neuhaus. When planning your visit, it is worth keeping differences in length, season and advance booking in mind.

Castle Ruins, Views and History

From the observation tower at the Neuhaus am Klausenbach castle ruins, the view stretches across the Neuhaus hills and Slovenia, onward to Tabor and Kapfenstein Castles, and as far as the Styrian hills. The castle ruins are easily reached from Neuhaus via a footpath; conditions along the way can vary. Remains of the former outer bailey can still be seen in the forest around the ruins. They add visible traces of the former complex to the view from the observation tower. Since 2025, the castle ruins have hosted a historical exhibition covering the ruins themselves as well as events in the municipality and surrounding municipalities. Check its current status before visiting.

The “Old Border” Circular Trail

The “Old Border” circular trail starts and ends at Tabor Castle and is 8 kilometres long. It explores repeated border changes and the chain of castles built in response to conflicts. While the observation tower offers views of the landscape, the circular trail focuses on border history. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Cycling in the Neuhaus Hills

An asphalted, hilly cycling route through the Neuhaus hills is about 43 kilometres long. It offers views of partly unspoilt nature and passes Tabor Castle in Neuhaus/Klausenbach. Compared with the 8-kilometre “Old Border” circular trail, it is considerably longer. This offers a choice between a history-themed trail and an asphalted, hilly cycling tour.

Apple Trail and Variety Garden

The Apple Trail offers families a “Culinary Journey Through the Apple Year” and has provided information since 1998 about the importance of fruit for health and about old fruit varieties. For visitors interested in fruit and cuisine, the trail offers a clear contrast to the castle ruins and border history. The central section of the variety garden, which is open to visitors, is located at the Fruit Paradise on the Lendl family farm in Kalch, part of the municipality of Neuhaus am Klausenbach. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. Groups can book guided tours of the variety garden, including a cider tasting at the cider bar, by prior arrangement. Confirm the current arrangements when making your enquiry.

Outdoor Swimming Pool in the Town Centre

The Neuhaus am Klausenbach outdoor swimming pool is located right in the town centre and has a play and sunbathing lawn. It is open seasonally and depending on the weather; check current opening information before your visit.
