Taradale combines walks of varying lengths and difficulty with a distinctive railway heritage. “Taradale by Track and Trail” includes local and district walks ranging from easy to challenging. If you would rather focus on the town’s history, follow the walking tour of twelve historic information boards located at important sites around Taradale. The trails offer a choice of length and difficulty; the information-board tour puts local history in the spotlight.
Walking Trails and Seasons
The final section of the Taradale portion of the Coliban Main Channel Walk is known for its spring flowers. The intensity of the blooms varies. So, if flowers factor into your choice of when to travel, spring offers a suitable seasonal connection for this section, though the same floral display should not be expected every year.
Taradale Mineral Springs Reserve also combines history with practical amenities. The reserve was gazetted in 1888 and has a mineral water pump. Other facilities include toilets, seating throughout the park and a free, gas-powered, covered barbecue area. If you want to plan your break around the facilities, check their current status before your visit.
Viaduct and Local History
Taradale Viaduct was completed in 1862, when the railway line from Kyneton to Bendigo opened. It spans more than 200 metres and is listed as a heritage site. Its construction date, connection to the railway line and scale give the structure a clearly defined place in Taradale’s railway history.
Taradale Mechanics Institute was built in the 1870s. It is said to have housed 1,556 volumes at one time. Today, the building is home to Taradale Historical Group Inc.; it was restored in 2010–2011. This brings together the building’s former use as a Mechanics Institute and the historical group’s work today.
Taradale railway station is now a private residence and is not open to the public. Visitors may view it from the outside; please respect the residents’ privacy.
Local Experiences and Events
Taradale Wine and Produce Store combines a wine shop with wine tastings, a café and an art gallery in a historic former post office. Its offerings include artisan wines, olive oil, artisan-baked bread, cheese, preserves, chocolate, cakes, coffee and wood-fired pizza. The combination of wine, food and art makes it a destination in its own right. As opening arrangements and product offerings may change, check what is currently available in advance.
Taradale Mineral Springs Festival is held every year over the Labour Day weekend in March. The venues are Taradale Mineral Springs Reserve and Taradale Hall. If you plan to attend the festival, confirm the exact date before travelling. A creatively designed children’s playground was established in Taradale in 2016 and is considered a major attraction for local and visiting families.
