Euroa sits at the foot of the Strathbogie Ranges and offers different ways to explore nature and local history. The arboretum, trails along Seven Creeks and historic buildings each offer a different focus for your stay. For planning, it is especially useful to distinguish between natural and waterside landscapes, a walk through the town, and a more demanding extension to a trail.
Arboretum and waterside trails
At the 27-hectare Euroa Arboretum, constructed wetlands and a chain of ponds provide habitat for invertebrates, which in turn feed fish, birds, frogs and reptiles. On the Daanak (Coolamon) Walking Trail, you can scan a QR code to hear an audio contribution from the Taungurung Traditional Owners and learn about seasonal changes and bush plants. According to the operator, the site is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year; check the opening details before your visit.
Seven Creeks Park is just a short walk from the town centre, a playground and Victoria Cross Memorial Park. The Euroa Fish Ladder is part of the gates that regulate the water level and form the lake in the park. The Travellers Rest and RV Comfort Stop at Seven Creeks Park includes men’s and women’s toilets, a changing room and a seating area with a terrace.
The Apex Walking Track is an easy, seven-kilometre trail along Seven Creeks. It starts at Seven Creeks Park and crosses the creek at the Rockies and at Butter Factory Bridge. A more demanding extension of the Rotary Lookout Walking Track is Balmattum Hill, which offers views over the town and west across the river plains. For a shorter alternative, take the Euroa Heritage Trail: an approximately three-kilometre circuit through the town that includes many historic buildings.
Euroa’s architectural and local history
Euroa’s third National Bank building was built in 1885 and is registered with the National Trust. The Farmers Arms Hotel Museum is housed in the historic Farmers Arms Hotel, which was first licensed in 1876. Its collection includes local artefacts such as clothing, household items, farm machinery and wartime memorabilia.
The old Euroa Flour Mill on Kirkland Avenue was historically significant as one of the town’s early major industries. Another episode in local history concerns the former Euroa Bank: it was robbed in 1878 by Ned Kelly and his gang, including Dan and Steve Hart.
More cultural events
Euroa Community Cinema is a program managed by Strathbogie Shire Council and overseen by a local volunteer committee; volunteers screen the films. If you would like to include a screening in your stay, check the dates in advance.
