The Cosechadora Rotania is considered the world’s first self-propelled combine harvester. Alfredo Rotania built it in 1929 in Sunchales. Together with local museums, historic buildings, and themed tours, this history brings the culture of the Castellanos Department area to life.

Cultural History in Sunchales

Sunchales is one of the historical points of interest in the area surrounding the destination. The Templo Parroquial “San Carlos Borromeo” was built between 1894 and 1896 without its towers. The Sociedad Italiana “Alfredo Cappellini” was declared a cultural heritage site by Ordinance 2061/2011 on March 28, 2011.

An older point of interest is the Fuerte de Los Sunchales: it was founded on April 11, 1796, and was part of a defensive line against the advance of Indigenous nations. The line was also intended to protect mercury transported from Almadén in Spain through Buenos Aires en route to Alto Perú for silver mining.

The Centro Cultural was established on August 2, 1940, as the “Centro de Cultura Musical Amigos del Arte,” at the initiative of Juan G. Bosch. It serves to bring a variety of artistic activities to the community, develop them, and share them with the community. The city’s history and religious heritage offer other perspectives: the Circuito Histórico highlights milestones in the city’s development and covers colonization, industrial development, and social change. The Circuito Religioso includes temples, places of worship, and religious expressions that are part of community life and local cultural heritage.

Green Spaces and Landscape

Sunchales is located in the Pampa Húmeda, a region characterized mostly by flat terrain. Los Gigantes Verdes, a green space with a stand of eucalyptus trees, is located in the Barrio Moreno neighborhood. Because of its social and ecological value, it was declared a “Historic Garden” and a cultural heritage site of Sunchales in 2018.
