San Luis offers several themes for a trip: vast natural landscapes, mining history, and water-based activities. To plan your trip, it helps to first consider which aspect interests you most. Parque Nacional Sierra de las Quijadas represents a vast natural area; La Carolina brings together historical, literary, and archaeological themes. At Dique Piscu Yaco, the focus is on activities related to water.

Natural destinations with different landscapes

Parque Nacional Sierra de las Quijadas is located in San Luis Province and protects more than 73,000 hectares of the Chaco Seco and Monte de Llanuras y Mesetas ecoregions, including wetlands of international significance. The size of the protected area and its two ecoregions give this natural destination a different focus from individual landscape features.

Salinas del Bebedero is an expansive white salt flat. The contrast between crystallized salt and blue sky makes it well suited to photography and contemplation. Siete Cajones offers a different setting: there, the river forms seven deep natural pools surrounded by mountainous scenery. An open salt flat and a river-shaped landscape thus offer two distinct natural settings.

Mogote Bayo protects ecosystems of the Chaco Serrano forest. Species found there include tabaquillo trees, Andean condors, pumas, and corzuelas. This forest and its biodiversity add a distinct ecological focus to the landscape themes of Salinas del Bebedero and Siete Cajones.

La Carolina: Mining History, Poetry, and Archaeology

La Carolina is considered a living testament to the mining success of San Luis and is associated with memories of the 16th-century gold rush. Possible activities include panning for gold in RĂo Amarillo and visiting an old mine. You can also take part in llama herding, go horseback riding, rappel, and trek. These options let you combine the historical connection with different kinds of active experiences.

Literature and archaeology are also among the town’s themes. Museo de la Poesía houses the collected works of San Luis writer and philosopher Juan Crisóstomo. The indigenous Diaguita culture once lived in Gruta de Inti Huasi near La Carolina. The museum and cave therefore appeal to different cultural interests: the work of a writer and philosopher in one case, and a connection with the history of the Diaguita culture in the other. Check the museum’s current opening arrangements before your visit.

Water Activities and Trekking

At Dique Piscu Yaco, you can take boat trips, kayak, canoe, and ride pedal boats; there is also a waterslide and a zip line. Other offerings include a sandy beach for swimming, craft stalls, and additional adventure activities. As individual operators may change, check in advance which offerings are currently available.

Salto de la Moneda is an almost 15-meter-high waterfall. It can only be reached by trekking along winding mountain paths. Take this access into account when planning: trekking is part of the route to the waterfall, making it a different activity focus from the water-based offerings at Dique Piscu Yaco.

When choosing destinations for your trip, consider their different focuses: Salinas del Bebedero and Siete Cajones differ in their salt flat and river pools; for activities, the offerings at the dam contrast with the trekking route to Salto de la Moneda. Make your choice based on whether you would rather admire landscapes or plan outdoor activities.
