The granite quarries of Potrerillo have walls more than 50 meters high. Together with Casa de Piedra and the Granite Festival, they provide concrete points of reference for the town’s mining heritage.
Casa de Piedra and Historical Traces
Casa de Piedra is an iconic building reached by a hiking trail. It is one of the places in Potrerillo that can be visited as part of mining tourism. For travel planning, it is both a distinctive building and a concrete point of reference for the area’s mining heritage.
The Iglesia de Casa de Piedra houses paintings dating from the mid-19th century. It adds a historical dimension to the town’s cultural landmarks, alongside the granite quarries and the work of the stonemasons.
Route 40 and the Granite Festival
Provincial Route 40 connects Potrerillo with Las Chacras de San MartĂn. The journey between the two towns can be made as part of mining tourism. This distinguishes it from the hiking trail to Casa de Piedra: Route 40 focuses on the connection between two towns, while the trail leads to a single building. This offers two ways to explore mining tourism: by visiting a specific destination or by traveling a route.
The Granite Festival in Potrerillo honors the work of the stonemasons and is a tradition in the Department of San MartĂn. It is free and open to everyone each year, attracting residents, tourists, artisans and artists from across the region. Alongside the quarries, the festival also puts the craftsmanship associated with granite in the spotlight.
More Places in the Department of Libertador General San MartĂn
Las Chacras is also part of the Department of Libertador General San MartĂn. Every year on June 24, it celebrates the anniversary of its founding in 1856. Las Chacras is also located on Provincial Route 41, a few kilometers south of San MartĂn. The annual commemorative date and the connection to the road offer different points of reference for this town.
In Paso Grande, the present-day Iglesia San José was completed in 1871. It is one of the oldest and most significant places in the municipality. The Fiesta Provincial del Cuarzo adds another highlight, featuring typical regional cuisine. A 2025 report describes the celebration as having been held for nearly three decades and says it usually takes place in February.
Nature activities are another part of what Paso Grande has to offer: visitors can cool off in the RĂo Conlara. The Balneario has campsites, quinchos and a yellow bridge over the stream. In summer, you can hike and ride along the river at El Vallecito. The 2025 report says the festival usually takes place in February; hiking and riding at El Vallecito are specifically summer activities.
