In Jáchal Department, marked trails, historic watermills and a range of tours in Parque Provincial Ischigualasto cater to different travel interests. There are also festivals focused on tradition and gastronomy. When planning your trip, you can explore nature, history and local food culture as separate themes, with options ranging from walking trails to a guided mountain biking tour.

On foot and along the walking routes

Área Protegida La Ciénaga covers 9,600 hectares and can be explored on foot via marked trails. Its size and the way it can be explored offer two different points of reference: the extent of the protected area and the opportunity to experience it on foot along its trails. If you enjoy walking, La Ciénaga is a clear nature-focused option for your trip.

Parque Provincial Ischigualasto is located in Valle Fértil and Jáchal departments. In the wider destination of San Juan, the traditional tour lasts approximately three hours; halfway along the route, it includes a visit to Museo de Sitio William Sill. The museum visit is therefore part of the tour. The approximate duration is a practical guide when fitting this route into your day.

Another option is the Circuito de Luna Llena in Parque Provincial Ischigualasto: it is offered on four days each month and includes a walk across light-gray sandstone in the light of the full moon. The full moon shapes both the name and the experience of this route. Check the current schedule before your trip, as the days it is offered are important for planning.

The Circuito de Mountain Bike offers a different experience. It is led by a local guide, and Parque Provincial Ischigualasto provides specially suited bicycles. The difference lies in the format: a traditional tour with a museum visit, a full-moon walk or mountain biking with a local guide.

Culture, mills and local traditions

The Molinos Harineros de Jáchal were built in the 19th century and powered by water from the rivers of Jáchal. Their history is therefore shaped by both the period in which they were built and their use of water power. This technical aspect adds a cultural and historical focus to the nature trails and tours.

The Fiesta de la Tradición Jachallera is legally recognized as a National Celebration of Tradition and takes place every year in the town of Jáchal, in the province of San Juan. The Fiesta Departamental del Pastel adds a gastronomic focus: held in July, it celebrates traditional local cuisine with a variety of pastels. Cultural themes thus range from a recurring celebration of tradition to a tribute to regional food culture.

San Juan in a wider context

In the wider destination of San Juan, white and multicolored sediments in Parque Provincial Ischigualasto form the landscape known as Valle de la Luna. Parque Nacional San Guillermo protects 166,000 hectares across the High Andes, Puna and Monte de Sierras y Bolsones ecoregions. Parque Nacional El Leoncito is home to two internationally significant astronomical observatories and records more than 300 clear nights per year. These examples complement Jáchal’s nature, history and culture with landscape, protected-area and astronomy themes from the wider destination of San Juan.
