In Albardón Department, viticulture and religious cultural heritage come together: a winery began producing wine by traditional methods here in 2002, while chapels and churches tell stories of different periods of construction and the contributions of local communities. Guided tours and geological discoveries complete the picture. On your trip, you can explore wine, cultural heritage and landscape as different facets of the same department.

Viticulture and Regional Cuisine

Bodega El Milagro began operating in Albardón in 2002. Its owner acquired vineyards there to produce wines by traditional methods. The winery offers guided cellar tours and tastings of its products. Its facilities also include a delicatessen, a ham-curing room and an ecumenical space. A cellar tour focuses on the place where the wine is made, while a tasting gives you the chance to sample the products. Check the reservation requirements before you arrive.

Another culinary experience is “Sabores entre albardas,” a gastronomic experience in Albardón featuring local restaurants registered with the Tourism and Culture Office and regional flavors. As participating restaurants and arrangements may change, check in advance which offerings are currently available.

Chapels, Churches and Cultural History

Capilla San Nicolás de Tolentino is located in Las Lomitas and is part of the cultural and natural heritage of San Juan Province. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1942. Its colonial architecture is evident in the combination of adobe bricks, reeds, mud and round timber. The altarpiece came from the Basílica de Santo Domingo, which was destroyed in the 1944 earthquake.

Capilla en Honor a San Roque is also part of the cultural and natural heritage of San Juan Province and is located in La Cañada. Its history dates back to 1913, when residents of La Cañada built an oratory in Albardón Department.

At Capilla Artesanal Virgen de la Carrodilla, local design and viticulture come together in a single building. Local residents built the chapel, which was designed by Juan Diapolo, a local winemaker and sculptor. It houses the patron saint of vineyards. Seen from a distance, its original design resembles a pink-painted boat.

Parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados, the patron church of Albardón Department, stands in Villa General San Martín. Gruta de la Virgen de Lourdes de las Siete Vertientes was built in 2007 with contributions from the Albardón community and worshippers from other places. A dedicated religious tourism route covers the department’s main religious attractions.

Albardón’s cultural history can also be seen beyond its religious buildings: Complejo Cultural Cine Teatro Albardon opened in 1950 under the name Cine Aconcagua and still stands opposite the departmental square.

Check route availability and the providers in advance.

Geology and Landscape

The active La Laja Fault is visible to the naked eye on the hill. The ground fracture shows the displacement of two large rock structures of different geological ages. Albardón therefore offers a glimpse of geological processes, as well as its architectural and wine-making history.

The “La Laja, Epicentro del Terremoto de 1944” promenade was inaugurated in the foothills of the Sierra de Villicum in Albardón Department and is intended to be established as a tourist and scientific attraction.

San Juan in the Wider Wine Context

In the wider destination of San Juan, the Tulum, Zonda and Ullum valleys are important wine-growing centers, with both traditional and modern vineyards and wineries. The Ruta del Vino in San Juan offers tastings of typical grape varieties such as Malbec, Syrah, Torrontés and Cabernet Sauvignon.
