Caucete Department’s cultural heritage encompasses religious traditions and historic chapels, as well as natural heritage and wine. To start planning your trip, you can choose a focus: Would you like to learn more about places of faith, discover the landscape around Baño del Indio, or explore regional products? The places and their stories offer different starting points for doing so.

Places of Faith and History

Baño del Indio is a sacred place for the Huarpe people and forms part of the province’s natural and cultural heritage. Access is on foot only, through colorful hills and a rocky gorge. Be sure to plan for the walk as part of your visit. The pilgrimage site of Difunta Correa is in Vallecito, in Caucete Department, between the Sierra de Pie de Palo and the Médanos Grandes.

The local tradition devoted to San Expedito also has a specific historical point of reference: it began after the saint’s image arrived in Bermejo in the mid-1950s. The Fiesta de la Uva y el Vino received national recognition in April 1991; the March 1992 edition was the first to be held under this status. These dates distinguish the beginning of the tradition from the festival’s later recognition.

Parroquia Cristo Rey was founded in 1878 and served as the center of religious life in Caucete. It hosts the celebrations for Cristo Rey and the Virgen del Valle. Among the chapels, Santa Ana is considered the oldest in Caucete: it was built in 1942 and survived the earthquakes of 1944 and 1977. Capilla Virgen Niña in El Rincón remained intact in the 1977 earthquake. Capilla de Guadalupe was built in 1994, after an image of the Virgen de Guadalupe arrived from Mexico.

Other stops showcase different forms of religious heritage. Carmelo de María Monastery was founded in 1981 by the Discalced Carmelite nuns in Villa Independencia and serves as a place of spiritual retreat. The Museo Histórico Regional de Caucete reopened in the former Dr. César Aguilar Hospital; the building was declared provincial historic heritage. Each site has its own story of construction, location, and use.

Wine and Regional Products

The Mujeres Algarroberas de Bermejo process carob pods into flour. Most of it is used to make Patay; under the Productores Bermejo brand, they sell the flour to retailers. Alongside wine, the processing of carob pods is part of Caucete Department’s culinary profile.

The Ruta del Vino, promoted by the municipality of Caucete, includes vineyards and offers visits with tastings at the Viñas de Aguilar, Callia, and Casa Montes wineries. The concept also includes explaining the entire wine production process. If you plan to visit a winery, check the current visitor arrangements with each one in advance.
