A 1.5-kilometer-long white-sand beach on the Uruguay River defines Balneario San José. Colón Department also offers protected nature, hot springs and historic sites: a former railway station, the ruins of the Falansterio and the history of Fábrica Colón. Those looking for more than a day at the beach will find a range of themes, from nature watching to the industrial history of Pueblo Liebig.

Experience the river landscape and nature

The Balneario San José Nature Reserve protects part of the floodplain forest, along with native flora and fauna. At the balneario, visitors can take expeditions, excursions, trips, wildlife-watching outings, tours and hikes. This means the beach and river landscape are complemented by different ways to experience nature.

Parque Río de los Pájaros is a multi-purpose nature area created to protect a wetland and its biodiversity. Visitors can go hiking, observe flora and fauna, and take bicycle trips there. Advance reservations are required for guided visits with local tour guides.

Hot springs and a taste of rural life

The grounds of Termas Colón offer views of the Uruguay River and its beaches. The complex has thirteen pools, including nine outdoor pools and three indoor pools. As facilities may change, check the pool details before your visit. In Villa Elisa, in Colón Department, the Termas Villa Elisa thermal complex covers 41 hectares and has ten pools for different uses and temperatures. The details highlight different features: river and beach views are part of the Termas Colón grounds, while Termas Villa Elisa is characterized by its size and the different uses of its pools.

Granja La Administración is located in the administrative area of the city of Colón and has a farmyard, a dairy and a cheese-making facility. Cow milking is offered there in the late afternoon. Visitors are also offered a country-style snack featuring regional products, craft beer and homemade bread. The rural setting is thus complemented by insights into food and agriculture.

History in different places

The ruins of the Falansterio are a historical and cultural attraction in Colonia Hughes, in Colón Department. Another historical setting can be found at Museo Histórico La Clarita: it is housed in a former railway station building in La Clarita. The former station is therefore itself part of the site where the museum is located.

The former Fábrica Colón also shaped the area’s industrial history. It was a large slaughterhouse that gave rise to Pueblo Liebig and operated for approximately 70 years. The town’s history is thus closely linked to the former factory; the ruins of the Falansterio and the former railway station building offer additional ways to explore the department’s cultural history.

Getting around the department

You can reach Colón by bus or private vehicle via National Route 14. In the Tierra de Palmares micro-regional tourism area, Colón, San José, Villa Elisa, San Salvador, Ubajay and Liebig are among the featured destinations. This regional grouping brings several places together under a shared tourism theme without equating their individual attractions.

Entre Ríos on a larger scale

Beyond the department, Entre Ríos provides a broader setting for the region’s hot springs: the province is Argentina’s “National Capital of Thermal Circuits” and has more than 125 swimming pools across 16 thermal complexes. These figures refer to Entre Ríos as a whole. The province’s natural areas also represent different landscapes: Parque Nacional El Palmar protects more than 8,200 hectares of the Espinal and Pampas ecoregions, including wetlands of international importance. Parque Nacional Pre-Delta protects more than 2,600 hectares of the Paraná Delta and Islands ecoregion, also including wetlands of international importance.

Cultural highlights in Entre Ríos include Palacio San José, an important example of mid-19th-century Italianate architecture in Argentina. It currently houses the Museo Nacional “Justo José de Urquiza.” At Museo Provincial Molino Forclaz, visitors can see inside the windmill and tour the old residence. Together with the local sites in Colón Department, these examples show how nature and culture are represented side by side at different levels across the province.
