El Durazno can be explored through two distinct focal points: Tashigar Sur is associated with the Dzogchen teachings, while the El Durazno lookout offers views of the Sierras Chicas and a small valley with houses more than a hundred years old. Nearby, the lookout is also surrounded by granite rocks with aligned pink feldspar crystals. Visitors can therefore choose between a spiritual and cultural connection, or a focus on the landscape and its geology.

Tashigar Sur: Dzogchen and practice

Tashigar Sur was established in the El Durazno area of the town of Tanti as one of the main seats of the International Dzogchen Community. It is a center for developing the Dzogchen teachings in South America. The Gonpa is used for studying and practicing these teachings. The community, teachings, and practice are all important to understanding the site: Tashigar Sur’s role describes its institutional context, while the Gonpa is the place for study and practice.

Summer activities and camping area

In summer, visitors and residents of Tashigar Sur take part in various activities, including Yantra Yoga and dances on a mandala. Since these activities take place in summer, check the dates if you are planning your stay around them. Tashigar Sur also has a camping area with a kitchen and restroom facilities. If you are considering staying there, check in advance whether it will be open during your visit and what availability is like.

El Durazno lookout: views and geology

The El Durazno lookout is part of the Circuito Geológico: Ruta de Alta Montaña. The views offer different perspectives: to the east, you can see the rise of the Sierras Chicas; to the west, the view extends over a small valley with houses more than 100 years old. Granite rocks with aligned pink feldspar crystals can be found near the lookout. Wide-open views and geological details are thus distinct landscape features found around the viewpoint.

Getting oriented on the road

The access road from Tanti to the Macizo Los Gigantes passes through El Durazno. This provides a specific road reference for getting oriented in the region, while the lookout is part of the geological circuit.

El Durazno in the Punilla Department

For a broader regional perspective, it is worth looking at Punilla Department. Cerro Uritorco, at 1,979 meters, is the highest point in northern Punilla. Quebrada del Condorito National Park is also located partly within Punilla Department. Its V-shaped gorge is 800 meters high and 1,500 meters wide at its broadest point; Andean condors can be observed from its upper edges. Cerro Uritorco and the gorge offer different landscape scales for understanding the region.
