Huerta Grande’s distinctive natural features include botanical collections, a river landscape, a waterfall and rock formations. A winding road with views of the valley also shapes the scenery. When planning your trip, it’s worth considering these places according to their different highlights: plants and collections alongside water, rocks and scenic views.
Botany in a private garden
The Jardín Botánico “Dr. Miguel Culaciati” is a private botanical garden covering an area of 24,000 m². It includes more than 200 classified species and about 100 additional species that are being studied. The two groups highlight different aspects of the garden: classified species and other plants that are the subject of research. The garden also has a reference library, a herbarium, a nursery, a stereo microscope, and a collection of fossils and minerals. Its botanical profile therefore extends beyond plant diversity to include a range of collections and research resources. For travelers interested in plants, this private garden is a distinct attraction alongside the area’s natural spaces and landscape features.
River, waterfall and rocks
The route along the Río Grande de Punilla features natural pools, old willows and the imposing Peñón del Águila, which towers over the landscape. The Cascada de Olmos offers a different geographical highlight: it lies at an altitude of 1,107 meters, in the heart of the Sierras Chicas. Piedras Grandes, in turn, is a natural area with large rocks in a wide variety of unusual shapes. Each place is defined by a different feature: pools and willows take center stage along the Río Grande, the location in the Sierras Chicas at the Cascada de Olmos, and distinctive rock formations at Piedras Grandes.
Trails and views
The Camino del Dragón is a winding, unpaved road at the foot of the Sierras, with the valley constantly in view. This route offers a different experience from the one along the Río Grande de Punilla: there, natural pools and old willows shape the landscape; here, the valley views unfold along the road. This comparison helps organize the area’s natural attractions by the kind of experience you’re looking for, without treating the routes as part of a single trail.
Relaxation beneath the trees
Balneario Municipal La Escondida is a place to relax and enjoy leisure activities beneath large trees. It adds a different highlight to the area’s landscapes and trails: recreation in the shade of large trees. Nearby, close to Piedras Grandes, is Las Muyunas. This protected natural area has a river swimming spot and a range of services; visitors can also observe native flora and fauna there.
A broader regional perspective: Departamento Punilla
Departamento Punilla offers a broader regional perspective. It has five major reservoirs where visitors can fish; sailing and motorized water sports are also possible. At 1,979 meters, Cerro Uritorco is the highest point in northern Punilla. The broader landscape also includes Quebrada del Condorito: the gorge is V-shaped, 800 meters high and 1,500 meters wide at its broadest point. Andean condors can be spotted from its upper edges. The national park lies partly within Departamento Punilla. For a different way to explore the region, the Camino de los Artesanos connects Villa Giardino and La Cumbre along a nine-kilometer route.
