At Parc National de Gouraya, Vgayeth’s natural environment can be described through specific figures and places. A total of 2,431 species have been recorded, including 1,429 animal species and 1,002 plant species. These recorded figures may change as future surveys are conducted. Alongside this overview of biodiversity, examples of specific animals and habitats help illustrate the character of the park.
Nature in Parc National de Gouraya
The park was established in 1984 and has been a UNESCO MAB Biosphere Reserve since 2004. The Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus) is considered a notable animal in the park. Another feature is a 2.5-hectare urban wetland that serves as a refuge for waterbirds. The natural features described therefore range from a highlighted animal species to a habitat for birds.
These differences offer several points of interest for exploring the park: you can focus on the Barbary macaque and its habitat, or consider the wetland as a distinct part of the park’s landscape. The Sentier Lemercier passes through the Barbary macaque’s habitat, linking a named trail with this natural feature.
Trails and natural attractions in the region
Another trail leads between wild olive and carob trees to Anse des Aiguades. From the main road, the path descends gently to the bay, which is suitable for a picnic break. The route therefore combines a walk through the vegetation described with a specific destination for a break. Local conditions may vary; take this into account when planning.
Cascade de Kefrida is also among the natural features mentioned in the Wilaya de Bejaïa: it is cited as an example of the wilaya’s waterfalls, which contribute to mountain tourism. In this regional overview, trails through different habitats and waterfalls as landscape features are presented side by side.
Algeria on a broader scale
Elsewhere in Algeria, other landscapes and cultural highlights can be found. In the southeast of the country, the 72,000 km² Tassili n’Ajjer plateau lies along the borders with Libya, Niger, and Mali. Tourism there is strictly controlled, and visitor groups are always accompanied by an official guide. If you include Tassili n’Ajjer in your travel plans, confirm the current arrangements with the local authorities in advance.
Another point of interest is Tipasa on the Mediterranean, 70 kilometers west of Algiers. The serial World Heritage property comprises three sites: two archaeological parks near the present-day urban area and the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania. The mausoleum is on the western Sahel Plateau of Algiers, 11 kilometers southeast of Tipasa. Historically, Tipasa was an ancient Punic trading post that Rome conquered and used as a strategic base for conquering the kingdoms of Mauretania.
The Kasbah of Algiers offers another cultural perspective. Its traditional urban structure is associated with a strong sense of community and developed through interactions among different population groups. Together with Tipasa and Tassili n’Ajjer, this view of Algeria shows how varied the country’s landscapes and cultural highlights are. Parc National de Gouraya, in turn, offers a specific connection to nature when planning a trip to Vgayeth.
