Rocky stretches of coastline, protected areas, and a lake with birdlife give Jijel Province several distinct natural attractions. The landscape cannot be reduced to the coast or the national park alone: different perspectives and interests emerge across the coastline, the Babors, and the lakes. When planning your trip, it is worth considering whether you would most like to focus on rocky landscapes, protected nature, birdlife, or places with their own story of discovery.
Coast, Park, and Lake: Distinct Natural Landscapes
One striking landscape feature is the Jijel Corniche: rocky cliffs line the coast between Ziama and El-Aouana. This is a clearly defined stretch of coast, distinguished by its rocky shoreline. In the broader picture of the wilaya, this feature sits alongside lakes and protected areas; it need not be associated with a visit to any one park. If you are interested in coastal landscapes, you can use the Jijel Corniche as a point of reference.
Taza National Park offers a different perspective. It covers 3,807 hectares, lies in the Little Kabylie of the Babors, west of Jijel Wilaya, and opens onto the Mediterranean. Its ecosystems include marine and terrestrial ecosystems; it is also home to several legally protected plant species. The park is part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. Taza is thus characterized by its geographical location, its ecosystems, and the protection of plant species. Those exploring the natural side of Jijel Province will find more than a single type of landscape here.
At Lake Beni Belaïd, the focus shifts to a smaller natural area. The natural lake in the El Ancer district covers 20 hectares; at least 23 bird species visit it. The area and bird count describe two different aspects: the modest size of the lake and its role as a place visited by numerous bird species. This makes the lake a distinct natural attraction, different from the larger ecosystems of Taza National Park.
A Story of Discovery and Other Natural Attractions
The Grotte Merveilleuse also has a story to tell: it lies between El Aouana and Ziama Mansourieh, 35 kilometers west of Jijel, and was discovered in 1917 during the construction of National Route 43. It is therefore notable not only for its name, but also for its specific historical context. When deciding what interests you, this offers a story of discovery alongside landscapes and wildlife, linked to road construction in the early 20th century.
The Taza National Park can be compared with the wildlife park in Kissir, in the municipality of El Aouana. The wildlife park covers 25 hectares and is home to several mammal species as well as bird aviaries. Compared with the 3,807 hectares of Taza National Park, this is a very different scale; the attractions also differ: marine and terrestrial ecosystems on one hand, mammals and bird aviaries at the wildlife park on the other. Based on the area and what each offers, you can decide whether to consider the national park’s diverse ecosystems or the smaller wildlife park as a nature attraction.
The Erraguene Dam is considered a visitor attraction, especially for those interested in mountain tourism and water sports. This adds a distinct option for travelers with these interests, alongside coastal landscapes, lakes, and protected areas.
