Bejaia combines urban history with a distinctive coastal landscape and a natural environment. Cap Carbon is less than five kilometres from the city centre and lies within Gouraya National Park. The natural heritage of central Béjaïa includes the Corniche du Cap Carbon and Gouraya National Park. The city, coast and park offer different highlights for your stay.

Cap Carbon, the Lighthouse and the Spring

Cap Carbon is home to one of the highest sea cliffs in the Mediterranean. The islet is connected to the coast by a small alluvial isthmus. A 19th-century lighthouse stands at its summit, reached by a path; it was built at an altitude of 220 metres.

Another natural attraction is Les Aiguades, a few kilometres from the city centre: the natural freshwater spring lies close to the sea and has been known for the purity and freshness of its water since Roman times. The two places offer different highlights: at Cap Carbon, the sea cliff and lighthouse take centre stage; at Les Aiguades, the spring is the main attraction.

Pic des Singes is located in Gouraya National Park and is named after the Barbary macaques that live there in the wild.

Urban History and the Museum

Bejaia is one of Algeria’s oldest cities. Emperor Augustus founded the city in 26–27 BC under the name Saldae.

Musée Bordj Moussa is a cultural attraction in its own right for a visit to the city. You can reach it from the city centre by car, taxi or on foot.

Boat Trips Along the Coast

Boat trips to Nizla Island, the caves and Cap Carbon depart from Port Tala Ilef on the Béjaïa coast. If you want to plan an activity on the water, Port Tala Ilef is the starting point for trips to several destinations; the lighthouse path at Cap Carbon is another way to include the coastal landscape in your travel plans.

Nature in the Broader Destination of Vgayeth

In the broader destination of Vgayeth, Gouraya National Park is located in the Wilaya de Béjaïa. It was established in 1984 and has been a UNESCO MAB biosphere reserve since 2004. A total of 2,431 species have been recorded in the park, including 1,429 animal species and 1,002 plant species; future surveys may change these figures.

The Barbary macaque is considered a standout animal in the park. In Vgayeth, the Sentier Lemercier trail passes through its habitat. The broader destination of Vgayeth also includes a 2.5-hectare urban wetland in Gouraya National Park, which provides a refuge for waterbirds.

Cascade de Kefrida also belongs to the regional context: in the broader destination of Vgayeth, it is cited as an example of the waterfalls in the Wilaya de Béjaïa that contribute to mountain tourism.

Plan Your Stay and Accommodation

Use the city centre, Cap Carbon and the port as different reference points, and compare the locations of specific hotels with the places you plan to visit. This lets you tailor your search to the character of your trip without assuming a fixed sightseeing itinerary.
