Spring and autumn bird migrations, ancient buildings and a 12th-century church shape the range of experiences in Orikum. The lagoon lies close to the town; at the beach, soft sand and the gently sloping access to the sea take centre stage. Nature watching, archaeological traces and the coast each offer a different perspective on the place.
Orikum Lagoon and Bird Migration
Orikum Lagoon lies on the coast of the Bay of Vlora, near the town of Orikum. It is part of the Karaburun Managed Nature Reserve and is designated an Important Bird Area (IBA). Visitors can watch birds with binoculars, especially in spring and autumn during migration. You can also walk and take photographs along the shore. The seasonal note applies primarily to birdwatching; walking and photography add other activities along the shore to the nature theme.
Traces of Archaeological Eras between the Sea and Karaburun
Orikum Archaeological Park lies between the sea and the Karaburun Mountains. The ancient city of Orikum, also known as Orikos, was founded around the 6th century BC. The ancient theatre in the park could seat around 500 to 600 spectators. The park also contains the ruins of a square monopteros building dating from the 3rd to 2nd century BC; a Late Antique tower stands on the eastern terrace. The dates place the structures in different periods: the monopteros building belongs to the centuries before Christ, while the tower dates from Late Antiquity. The theatre’s approximate capacity also gives an idea of the scale of the ancient structure.
Marmiroi Church and the Route to Bristan Bay
Marmiroi Church was built in the 12th century, is legally protected as a cultural monument and is visited by tourists. It has a central dome and a cruciform interior floor plan. These two features describe different aspects of its architecture: the dome and the shape of the interior.
The route from Marmiroi Church to Bristan Bay is in the Karaburun Managed Nature Reserve, in Vlorë County. It is 8,170 metres long, takes 1 hour and 50 minutes, and is of moderate difficulty. The distance, duration and difficulty provide practical guidance for planning this hike. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Beach and Character of the Town
Orikum Beach lies near the archaeological site of Orikum and the marina. It has soft sand and a gently sloping access to the sea; seasonal conditions may vary.
Orikum retains the atmosphere of a coastal settlement whose life is connected with the sea, traditional agriculture and fishing. This agriculture includes olive trees and vineyards. The sea, agriculture and fishing add further connections to the place alongside its archaeological and landscape themes.
