The landscape of Vlora County combines mountains and valleys with wetlands, sandy beaches and rocky coastlines. This diversity shapes the ways to explore the region: wildlife watching goes hand in hand with boat trips, historic sites and a distinctive food culture.

Mountains, Coast and Protected Nature

Llogara National Park lies between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Forests, pastures, meadows and steep rocky terrain define the park. Around 1,400 species of higher plants and 15 natural habitat types offer insight into its ecological diversity.

Karaburun-Sazan is Albania’s only marine national park; it is home to 36 internationally significant marine species. On boat trips, visitors can explore caves, canyons and small bays, including Haxhi Ali Cave. It is accessible only by boat from Vlora; boat trips and swimming are among the ways to visit.

Sazan can also be reached by tourist boat from Vlora and is open to visitors. Access rules may vary seasonally. The island contains the remains of a military base, tunnels and buildings from the Cold War. A visit to the island therefore connects visitors with a history that differs markedly from the national park’s natural features.

Grama Bay is accessible only by boat. Its white stones, beach and cliffs provide a setting for swimming and exploration; conditions may vary depending on the weather. Rock inscriptions dating from Roman and medieval times also give this coastal site a historical dimension.

Birdwatching at the Lagoons

Narta Lagoon is a protected ecological area and a habitat for waterbirds and other wildlife. Birdwatching is possible here, as are nature walks and educational activities. Orikum Lagoon offers a different experience: it is an Important Bird Area within the managed Karaburun protected area and is suitable for birdwatching, coastal walks and photography. The official protected-area designation may be updated.

Both lagoons appeal to nature lovers, but each has a different focus. At Narta Lagoon, nature walks and educational activities are among the possible visitor experiences; coastal walks and photography are also described as activities at Orikum.

History in Museums and at Historic Sites

The National Museum of Independence is housed in the building where Albania’s independence was declared and the first government formed on November 28, 1912. This date gives a museum visit a specific point of reference in the country’s history.

The Historical Museum of Vlora displays original objects from antiquity to the present day, including material from Orikum, Amantia, Mavrovo and Kanina. At Kanina Castle, visitors can explore defensive walls, towers and archaeological remains. Butrint combines archaeological monuments and Mediterranean nature in an exceptional cultural landscape. Together, these sites offer different perspectives: from a pivotal political date to museum collections and architectural and archaeological traces.

Regional Cuisine and Beaches of Vlora

Vlora’s cuisine includes fresh fish, squid and mussels, as well as wild-herb pies, vegetable casserole and lamb cooked in a basket. White cheese and Hasudeja round out the selection. Vlora Bay is an important mussel-farming area; seaside restaurants serve fresh seafood. Olive oil also has a long production tradition in the Vlora region, particularly in Dukat and Kanina. Both places are also associated with artisan-made wine, produced mainly from local grape varieties.

In the municipality of Vlora, Old Beach and New Beach have developed promenades, restaurants and cafés. The calm, shallow waters at these beaches are suitable for families. They complement the region’s natural and cultural attractions with a distinct stretch of municipal coastline.
