Geta combines wide-open views with coastal scenery, outdoor activities and a rich local history. An observation tower on Getabergen, the Geta folk costume, a historic cave and various collections offer different ways to spend your time here. You can get to know Geta through its landscapes, explore its history or make both a focus of your stay.
Views, Coast and Outdoor Activities
The 15-metre-high observation tower on Getabergen offers wide-ranging views over the Norrhavet and the Ă…land mainland. On a clear day, you may also be able to make out the Swedish mainland to the west. Climbing and bouldering are also possible on the same mountain; the viewpoint and these activities offer different reasons to explore Getabergen.
Djupviken offers a different perspective on the coast: the natural harbour is known among boaters for its sheltered location. If you’re looking for another activity, there’s a disc golf course at Soltuna Restaurant. There is also a public beach in the municipality of Geta at Knutnäs in Olofsnäs. The beach is maintained and inspected annually. It’s a good idea to check the current conditions before visiting.
Folk Costume Traditions, Church and Collections
The Geta folk costume is based on a design by Amanda Nordblom and textile artist Anna Kajsa Sundberg from Pantsarnäs in Geta. The costume is still worn today at events such as Midsummer celebrations and other festivities in the municipality. It is therefore not only part of local history, but also of a continuing festive tradition.
The collection at the Dånö pilot and fishing cottage consists of household items and tools that have been donated, deposited or acquired at auctions. Notable items include a figurehead and an 18th-century cupboard. Geta Church is dedicated to Saint George; its nave and northern sacristy probably date from the 1460s. This dating refers to these parts of the building.
The Geta nostalgia and motor museum is located at the entrance to Vestergeta. It displays engines, cars, other vehicles and various objects. Getagrottan offers another glimpse into the past: during the Great Northern War in the early 18th century, the cave served as a refuge for the local population. If you’re planning a museum visit, check the latest visitor information beforehand.
A Seasonal Excursion
For the 2026 season, Lolo’s Seaside Café in Geta is listed as the departure point for an excursion on the M/S Silvana to Sälskär Lighthouse. Check the specific dates for the season before planning. This lets you consider the excursion as a separate option without assuming it’s available beyond the stated season.
More to Explore in the Wider Ă…land Countryside Destination
The wider Åland countryside destination offers more cultural and landscape highlights. At the Bomarsund Visitor Centre, the area’s history is presented through sound and images. Kastelholm Castle was built as a defensive fortress at the end of the 14th century; the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum is also located in the Kastelholm area. Jomala Church is one of Finland’s oldest stone churches.
On Prästö, the cemeteries of Greek Orthodox, Muslim, Lutheran, Catholic and Jewish communities are connected with the period when Bomarsund Fortress was built. The Prästö hiking trail passes a Russian telegraph station and its accommodation, Doniken. Both are among the few surviving Russian buildings in Åland. These places offer the wider destination a distinctive historical perspective.
Small-scale producers are also part of the region. In the Ă…land countryside, visitors can stroll among extensive apple orchards to buy the famous apple juice, or visit a caramel workshop and try handmade sweets. The availability of individual producers may vary.
