Maritime Traditions and Museums

The Nordic tradition of clinker-built boatbuilding is recognised as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO and is considered deeply rooted in Åland. Mariehamn’s Maritime Quarter has a boat harbour as well as facilities for rope-making, blacksmithing, carpentry and rigging. Here, the harbour and a range of crafts come together.

The Åland Museum of Cultural History and the Åland Art Museum are housed in the same building in Mariehamn. Visitors interested in culture can therefore find two museums in one place.

History Between Kastelholm and Önningeby

Åland’s only castle is in the Kastelholm area. The open-air museum Jan Karlsgården is also located there. These two sites offer different ways to explore history: the castle and the open-air museum.

The Önningeby Museum displays landscape paintings from around the turn of the 20th century. At that time, the Önningeby artists’ colony was a creative community of painters. Åland’s art history can thus be explored through both paintings and an artists’ community from that period.

Routes, Nature Trail and Experiences

The main-island section of the Åland Archipelago Trail runs from Prästö in Sund in the north to Lumparland in the south. Jomala Church is on the route; its tower dates from the late 13th century. Prästö also has a nature trail featuring historic sights. The route provides a north–south orientation, while the trail focuses on historical discoveries along the way.

Different interests can also lead to unique experiences: young people can go kayaking in Åland. Near Godby, Stallhagen Brewery offers tours and beer tastings. At Nygårds Pig Farm, visitors can take a safari and meet the pigs. Tours take place on Wednesdays in July; check the current season’s schedule before your visit. Golf and Getting There

The Slottsbanan golf course is in the Kastelholm area. Every one of its 18 holes offers a sea view. Åland Golf Club has two 18-hole courses and a 6-hole par-3 course. The club is on a peninsula between two sea bays, next to the medieval Kastelholm Castle.
