Öra offers a tangible introduction to Hammarland’s coastal landscape: the natural beach has red granite rocks where you can sunbathe, and views of Marsund’s bridge. From Klintbergen, the view stretches across the Åland Sea, the north-western archipelago and inland Åland. The coast and views offer different perspectives on the landscape; they complement the hiking opportunities and historical themes that shape a stay in Hammarland.
Coast, Hiking Trails and Seasonal Planning
The Sadelinleden is an approximately 77 km hiking trail in the area of the municipalities of Hammarland and Finström; it is intended to be developed in stages. Before setting out on a section, check local information on the current trail conditions. The trail can be walked in shorter sections and in either direction, and passes several villages and attractions. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish the total trail length from the section you actually choose: around 77 km describes the trail, not necessarily your individual hiking day. There is a viewing tower on Klintbergen along the Sadelinleden.
Cyclists can also plan to take the private bicycle ferry M/S Silvana, which operates during the peak summer season between Skarpnåtö in Hammarland and Lolo's Seaside Café in Snäckö in Geta. If the crossing is part of your plans, check the current operating period and timetable in advance.
Local Culture and Historical Traces
At Skarpnåtö Hembygdsgård, film history and local materials come together as distinct themes. Parts of the films “Stormskärs Maja” and “Iris” were filmed in the picturesque surroundings of Skarpnåtö Hembygdsgård. The Hembygdsgård has literature about Skarpnåtö, as well as hides and handicrafts.
Hammarland’s history also includes the development of cultural life: thanks to P.U.F. Sadelin, the first library in Åland was established in Hammarland. S:ta Catharina Church is a stone church dating from the late 13th century. Sålis Batteriberg was fortified by Russia during the First World War. The church and the battery hill point to different historical themes: sacred stone architecture and military fortification.
Nearby, Sälskär offers a historical point of reference. It lies northwest of mainland Åland and was historically an important base for seal hunting.
Sälskär Lighthouse was built in 1868 and was manned until it was automated in 1948.
More History in the Åland Countryside
The wider destination of the Åland countryside has more historical sites to explore. At the Bomarsund Visitor Centre, the area’s history is presented through sound and images. Kastelholm Castle was built as a defensive fortress in the late 14th century; the open-air museum Jan Karlsgården is also located in the Kastelholm area. These examples offer further perspectives on the region’s history, alongside Hammarland’s local cultural and coastal themes.
