Commemoration and Legacy
The Nguyễn Thị Định Memorial Site opened in December 2003 in Ấp Phong Điền, Lương Hòa Commune, Giồng Trôm District, and covers an area of 15,000 m². The complex includes a stele house, a temple, an exhibition room, a documentary screening room, a rest building and Nguyễn Thị Định’s office building. For more than 20 years, the memorial site has been used for visits, religious worship and sharing the story of her life and work. The site’s redevelopment is intended to commemorate Nguyễn Thị Định and recognize her contributions to national liberation and the building of the country. By 2024, some parts had already fallen into disrepair. Check current access before visiting.
Temples, Woodcarving and Festival Days
Đình Bình Hòa is located in Ấp 5A in the town of Giồng Trôm and is one of the three large communal temples in Bến Tre Province. On January 7, 1993, the temple was recognized as a national historical and cultural monument. The main hall and its associated worship area feature distinctive antique wood carvings made from valuable woods such as Căm xe, Tứ thiết and Sao. The temple thus brings together historical significance and a specific feature of traditional craftsmanship.
The annual Kỳ-Yên Festival at Đình Bình Hòa, also called the Thượng-Điền Festival, takes place on the 12th and 13th days of the twelfth lunar month. It includes Hát bội and other traditional folk games. Since the festival dates follow the lunar calendar, check the exact dates if you would like to plan your stay around them.
Other historical sites also shape the cultural landscape of Giồng Trôm District. The tomb and temple of Lãnh binh Nguyễn Ngọc Thăng are among the district’s four national historical monuments. The memorial site marking the 1947 massacre of 286 innocent civilians is also one of these monuments. Tân Hào Commune is also home to the temple of Lieutenant General Đồng Văn Cống, a provincial historical and cultural monument.
Coconut Crafts and Regional Context
On Cồn Hưng Phong, weaving baskets from coconut leaf stalks and making crafts from coconut shells are among the attractions visitors seek out. The two crafts differ in their raw materials: leaf stalks are woven into baskets, while coconut shells are used to make crafts. A look at the materials used thus complements the historical and religious themes of the memorial sites and temples.
The wider Vinh Long destination has its own distinct cultural context. Construction of Văn Thánh Miếu Vĩnh Long began in 1864 and was completed in 1866; it honors Confucius and his disciples. The annual Hùng Vương commemoration is a provincial festival held on the tenth day of the third lunar month.
Another focus in Vinh Long is Cù lao An Bình: visitors can cycle along winding village roads between communes and row on the canals. Tourist boats are the main means of transport for visitors who want to reach the island.
