Ha Tien combines a history spanning nearly 300 years, closely linked to the Mạc family, with a striking landscape of mountains, caves, and Đông Hồ Lake. This offers several different ways to explore the area: learn about the history of the family, take in views of the city and lake from Tô Châu Mountain, or compare the shapes of nearby limestone mountains. The night market adds another dimension, with local products and handicrafts among the goods on offer. This blend makes Ha Tien an interesting destination if you would like to experience culture and landscapes side by side.

The Mạc Family’s Cultural History

Ha Tien was established nearly 300 years ago and is closely associated with the Mạc family. More than 40 family tombs, marked by stone steles, are located on Lăng Mountain, also known as Bình San. The Phù Dung Pagoda is nearby. Mạc Thiên Tích had it built for his second wife so that she could practice her faith there. The Mạc family named the two large bronze bells at Tam Bảo Pagoda “Tiêu tự thần chung.” The Mạc connection is evident in several ways: in the tombs, the pagoda’s religious purpose, and the name of the bells.

Views and Landforms

For views across Ha Tien, head to Tô Châu Mountain: visitors can climb to its summit and look out over the city. Đông Hồ is also within view. The lake, at the mouth of the Giang Thành River, is 3 km long and 2 km wide.

At Thạch Động, an unusual shape defines the view: the nearby mountain is 98 meters high and resembles the feathered hat of an English royal guard. The Tiên Sơn Pagoda is inside the cave, and its main hall is also located within the cave. Nearby Đá Dựng is 83 meters high, with a flat summit and numerous caves containing glistening stalactites. The two mountains offer different highlights: Thạch Động is notable for its hat-like shape, while Đá Dựng combines a flat summit with caves and stalactites.

Mũi Nai is about 5 km from the center of Ha Tien and has long been known for its beach. The landscape highlights therefore vary: Tô Châu is all about views of the city and lake; Thạch Động and Đá Dựng are distinguished by their unusual mountain and cave formations; and Mũi Nai is known for its beach.

Market and Local Products

The Hà Tiên Night Market offers another side of the area. Numerous stalls sell mainly regional specialties from southwest Vietnam, fish and seafood, dried goods, and handicrafts. The mix of local food, dried goods, and handicrafts sets the market apart from the landscape attractions of the mountains and lake. The range of goods at the stalls may change.
