In the town of Tt. Đông Anh are Chợ Trung tâm Đông Anh and Chợ Ga Đông Anh markets; nearby Cổ Loa offers a different focus: a specially protected national monument with moats, an exhibition and archaeological themes. This distinction helps with travel planning without treating the places as one and the same. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, first consider whether you mainly want to get to know the town itself or include Cổ Loa as a nearby cultural point of interest in your trip.
Moats and ramparts at Cổ Loa
A dense network of waterways extends around Cổ Loa. Outside each rampart ring is a moat with an average width of 10 to 30 metres; the moats are connected to one another and to the Hoàng River. Water is therefore not a single detail of the monument, but part of a network that accompanies the rampart rings. Those interested in the historic site can consider this aspect of the landscape alongside the archaeological finds: the waterways and the history of the monument area offer different perspectives on nearby Cổ Loa.
Exhibition house and archaeological finds
The exhibition house for documents and archaeological finds is also in the vicinity of the destination and is connected with the above-ground architectural ensemble of monuments. On the first floor, a scale model and a plan are displayed, while documentaries and images about the Cổ Loa monument area are shown in a screening room. The second floor displays 300 selected archaeological finds. They date from the Phùng Nguyên period to the present day and are connected with the history of Cổ Loa–Đông Anh in Hanoi. The house serves visitors who wish to see, explore and study this significant national monument area.
The two floors have different focuses: the model, plan and screening room direct attention to the monument area, while the selected finds span the period from the Phùng Nguyên period to the present day. In this way, spatial representation and archaeological objects come together in one exhibition house. This offers visitors a concrete distinction to consider: is the site as a whole the main focus, or the long span of time reflected in the finds?
In December 2024, the goal was set to further develop Cổ Loa’s heritage by managing, protecting, preserving and presenting its values. This was intended to make it an important and attractive destination in Vietnam and a part of a tourist route in Hanoi.
Cultural activities and dated events
One other example of heritage interpretation was the tour “Discovering the ancient capital of the Việt people,” launched in 2023. Visitors could make clay arrowheads; the activity was based on a replica of a mould for arrowheads found by scientists in Cổ Loa. Visitors could also watch the preparation of bún xào cần Mạch Tràng, described as a famous dish, and try it. Hands-on crafts and culinary experiences were combined in this tour format.
Another specific date is the opening of the 2026 Cổ Loa Spring Festival, held on 22 February 2026 at the specially protected national monument. If you want to plan your trip around a festival date, check the date for the specific edition of the event.
