Nukus District brings together the lowlands along the lower Amu Darya, lakes, tugai vegetation and sandy highlands in the east. The landscape and cultural sites can be viewed as distinct highlights: river lowlands and dunes sit alongside nature and historic sites.

Landscape Between River and Dunes

Nukus District lies on the eastern bank of the lower Amu Darya in a lowland landscape. The Amu Darya depression lies to the west; sand dunes and rows of sandy hills stretch to the east.

Orolbuyi National Nature Park stretches along the border between Bo‘zatov and Nukus District. The official protected-area description from April 2025 lists 102 identified plant species in the park.

Lakes, Floodplains and Wildlife

The district’s lakes include Nazarxon Lake, Sapokko‘l and several smaller bodies of water. Conditions at the lakes can vary by season. If you include these landscapes in your plans, take this seasonal variation into account.

The Amu Darya floodplains feature tugai vegetation, including turangil, tamarisk, jiyda, grasses and reeds; the extent of the vegetation can change. Wild boar, jackal, hare, muskrat and badger are associated with the reed beds and tugai areas. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. The fish fauna is also associated with the Amu Darya and the district’s lakes: it includes carp, catfish, pike and grass carp, among others.

Tok Qala and Mausoleums

Tok Qala, also known as Darsan, lies on a small natural hill near To‘ktog‘ and covers eight hectares. The site is divided into ancient, early medieval and cemetery areas. The Azler-Bobo Mausoleum is located in Samanbay within Nukus District, east of Tok Qala. The Imam-Iyshan Mausoleum is in the village of Qrantau in the district. Check locally whether Tok Qala and the mausoleums are accessible before your visit.

Agriculture and Regional Context

A report from July 2025 describes Nukus District as specializing in melons, vegetables and fruit. It lists 432 hectares of orchards established by 118 farmers and agricultural enterprises, as well as 28 hectares of vineyards established by 15 farmers and agricultural enterprises. Specializations, areas and the businesses involved may change.

In the wider regional context of Karakalpakstan, traditional cuisine is associated with pilaf, manti, samsa and fish prepared according to local recipes. In addition to beef and mutton, horse and camel meat are also mentioned. Karakalpakstan’s applied arts tradition includes the Shogirme headdress, traditional musical instruments, and wood and leather crafts.

Accommodation for a Park Visit

According to official visitor information, there are no hotels near Orolbuyi National Nature Park; Nukus city center is recommended as a place to stay. As accommodation options may change, check the latest information before traveling.

Check Transport Connections

Regular bus services are described on the Nukus–Khalqabad–Chimbay–Takhtakupyr, Nukus–Oqmang‘it–Qozonketgan–Qozondaryo and Nukus–Khojayli–Qo‘ng‘irot–Moynaq routes. A railway line also runs through Nukus District. Check current departure points and timetables before your trip; this regional transport information does not confirm a direct connection to the national nature park or a mausoleum.
