Around 1,000 works in a permanent exhibition and a 25-metre-high monument give Urganch two distinct points of interest. The city also has a museum devoted to the history and culture of Khorezm, a theatrical tradition and a railway station of regional importance. When planning your stay, consider whether to focus on the city’s attractions or include regional offerings as well.
Art, history and theatre
The Museum of Modern Art of Uzbekistan in Urganch displays around 1,000 paintings, graphic works and sculptures in its permanent exhibitions. The Khorezm Mamun Academy Museum takes a different thematic approach: its permanent exhibition covers the history and culture of Khorezm and is divided into twelve sections. This gives you a choice between focusing on painting, graphic art and sculpture, or exploring regional history and culture.
The history of regional theatre is also connected to Urganch: in 1931, the regional theatre moved here from Khiva. The musical theatre production “Ko‘ngil devori” was performed at the Ogahiy Regional Musical Drama Theatre on 22 January 2024. Since schedules and repertoires can change, check the current programme if you are planning a specific visit.
Monument and cityscape
The Jaloliddin Manguberdi Memorial Complex makes a striking impression with its 25-metre-high statue. It depicts Jaloliddin Manguberdi holding a horse’s reins. The complex covers around eight hectares; a road tunnel was built beneath the square with the monument. The statue, square and size of the grounds give the site a different scale from the two museums and help distinguish the city’s cultural attractions.
Getting there and the nature park
Urganch railway station is the main transport hub of the Xorazm region. From there, there are convenient connections to Toshkent, Buxoro, Samarqand and Xiva. If you are arriving by train or continuing your journey in the region, take these connections into account when planning and check the timetable before departure.
The Khorezm National Nature Park is another option for nature and excursions. It can be reached from Urgench using specially organised bus services; check transport arrangements before your trip. Ecotourism routes have opened in the park, leading in four directions past historical and natural attractions in the Xorazm region. Check the conditions for the respective routes locally as well.
Another regional option is the Urganch–Tuproqqala route to the Uch Uchoq geological and historical site. The route is listed as 200 kilometres long. Check the route and visitor services locally.
Khorezm as a regional setting
The wider destination of Khorezm offers a distinctive perspective on historic architecture and regional cuisine. Ichan-Kala, the inner fortress of Khiva in the Xorazm region, has a history spanning more than 2,000 years. The complex includes 51 ancient monumental buildings and 250 houses; the Juma Mosque is adorned with 212 columns.
Two regional dishes also have distinct characteristics: Shivit Oshi consists of bright green noodles made with dill infusion, served with meat sauce and a tangy fermented milk topping. Tukhum Barak is a traditional pastry filled with an egg-based mixture. These examples of architecture and cuisine complement the museums, monument and theatrical history as distinctive themes of the Khorezm destination.
Plan your hotel search around your itinerary
When searching for hotels in Urganch, first decide whether you mainly want to visit the city’s attractions or also include regional routes. Specific timetables matter for train connections and organised bus services; local route conditions are important for the nature park trails. These decisions can help you tailor your accommodation search to the activities you actually have planned.
